Function : The Public Relations team is one of six sections within the Administration Program of the Montana Historical Society. It encompasses communications, marketing, development and membership activities. Under the direction of the Public Relations Manager, this position is responsible for MTHS’s communication and marketing activities and is the agency’s public information officer. Among other skills, the ability to exhibit ingenuity, be collaborative, think strategically, and have a welcoming and friendly attitude is important to this position.
Other : The Communications and Public Information Officer will work a standard 40-hour a week schedule, Monday through Friday, with occasional night or weekend event attendance to provide news coverage.

Representative Duties :
- Develop and execute an annual strategic communications and marketing plan.
- Develop, edit, and promote informational materials about agency activities and programs.
- Release information to the public through various communications methods, such as press releases, speeches, presentations, websites, emails, newsletters, digital platforms, and social media. This includes preparing talking points for staff and administrators.
- Serve as a point of contact for the Director’s office for requests for information; interviews and comments to the press; and management of crisis communications.
- Establish guidelines to organize daily operations and oversee all materials and promotions that affect MTHS brand and marketing priorities.
- Represent the agency or program to internal and external stakeholders, such as other agencies, media, public, tourism, and interest groups.
- Plan and schedule promotional activities, coordinating with the agency’s programs to ensure that each activity meets expectations and is successful.
- Evaluate communication, marketing, and outreach performance and develop enhancements and recommendations as necessary to ensure MTHS remains competitive with similar organizations in the industry.
- Identify, define, and develop key markets for MTHS programs and services.
- Measure and analyze the effectiveness of marketing campaigns and strategies.
- Oversee branding, marketing, website, and graphic design activities and contracts.
- Oversee design & update of agency website, including navigation improvements, breaking news, image enhancements, promotional or information materials.
- Conduct research on marketing and / or advertising strategies to identify audiences and create marketing and branding campaigns.
- Create and analyze customer satisfaction surveys, using data to implement improvements to current advertising, marketing, and / or communication strategies and build customer loyalty.
- Work with the State of Montana’s Office of Public Information Requests (OPIR) to respond to all Public Information Requests.
