Job Description Summary

Seeking a motivated individual for a research specialist position in neuroimmunology for projects that encompasses basic and translational research.

Work in the laboratory is centered around the complement system and neuroinflammatory mechanisms. Ongoing projects involve investigating acute and chronic neuroimmune responses occurring after stroke or after different types of traumatic brain injury, including the long-term neurodegenerative sequalae of injury. For example, one project is focused on traumatic brain injury as a risk factor for Alzheimer’s Disease.

Another project investigates pathogenic mechanisms of postnatal hemorrhagic stroke and neurodevelopmental consequences. Studies utilize various mouse models. Techniques will include advanced microscopy, cellular and molecular immune profile analysis, high dimensional analyses, and detailed assessments of motor and cognitive functions, The laboratory is also developing novel transgenic animals for mechanistic studies, and is involved in the development (and commercialization) of novel therapeutic approaches. The laboratory has been a leader in the development of novel targeted complement inhibitory strategies.

Job Description

Assist in projects related to above described work. Perform experimental procedures relevant to projects such as tissue procurement and specimen processing, histological and immune analysis, confocal and super-resolution microscopy etc. 35%

In terms of the above listed techniques, analyze and interpret data. Will also involve use of image analysis software and generation of computer images. Assist with analysis of mouse behavioral data. 35%

Assist other lab personnel in related projects. Participate in lab meetings and project-specific meetings with other lab personnel. 15%

Keep records and up to date lab notebook/lab archives. Assist with writing methodology required for manuscripts and grants. Keep up to date with relevant literature. 15%

MUSC Minimum Training And Experience Requirements

A bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or other natural, life or health care science and one year work experience directly related to the assigned research area.

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: A BS degree in biology or other natural, life or health care science related to the assigned area of research. At least three years experience working in a research laboratory.

(Frequent) Ability to push/ Ability to lift 40 lbs. centrifuge rotors from floor level to height of 40 inches, then down 20 inches into centrifuge drum, unassisted. (Infrequent) Ability to lift 25 lbs. boxes, from floor level to maximum height of 72 inches, unassisted. (Infrequent) Ability to push/pull file boxes from one location to another at floor level. (Frequent) Ability to maneuver heavy equipment on bench tops, 50 lbs. or greater, unassisted. (Frequent) Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements. (Continuous) Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors, normally. (Continuous) Ability to hear and recognize various alarms emitting from work area systems. (Continuous) Ability to hear and/or understand conversations. (Continuous) Ability to work in a darkroom for processing film, etc. (Continuous) Ability to be qualified physically for respirator use, initially and annually. (Continuous) Additional New Requirements: Ability to work rotating shifts as required. Ability to work overtime as required. Ability to learn and use new processes, tools and equipment as required.
