Andrew W. Mellon Fellow, Science (Regular, Full-Time)
Conservation Center
Reporting to the Head Scientist of the Conservation Center, the Conservation Research Fellow will contribute to ongoing scientific investigations in the Conservation department. The successful candidate will work within the Conservation Research Laboratory, collaborating with conservation scientists, and conservators, to support the preservation and understanding of the museum collections. In addition to participating in interdisciplinary projects, the Fellow will develop and lead their own research project, which will be selected at the beginning of the fellowship in consultation with the conservation research team.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct analysis on conservation materials and techniques, with a focus on sustainable and innovative approaches.
- Perform non-invasive and micro-invasive analyses using techniques such as Raman spectroscopy, FTIR, Py-GCMS, HPLC-DAD, and SEM-EDS to study the composition and degradation of artworks.
- Develop and lead an independent research project, working closely with the conservation research team and conservators to explore new methodologies in conservation science.
- Present research findings at professional conferences and contribute to peer-reviewed publications.
- Work closely with conservators and curators to provide scientific insights into materials and techniques used in artworks, aiding in conservation decision-making.
- Collaborate with internal and external partners, including universities, conservation institutes, and other museums, to foster knowledge exchange and interdisciplinary research.
Benefits:
The expected hourly rate for this Los Angeles, CA based position is $24.72 - $25.96 subject to change, and the position is eligible for LACMA’s comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications:
A Master’s degree in conservation science or in STEM fields including chemistry, physical science, geology, and materials science. At least 1 years of experience in scientific research, preferably in the field of cultural heritage or a related field.
Experience in the use of several analytical techniques such as: X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer, Raman, FTIR, SEM/EDS and Py-GCMS etc.
Excellent organization, communication, and writing skills.
