Research Assistant (Regular, Part-Time)

Reporting to the Associate Curator, the Research Assistant will support the forthcoming reinstallation of the Arts of the United States in LACMA’s new David Geffen Galleries (opening April 2026). The Research Assistant will conduct research on the permanent collection, compile bibliographies and exhibition histories, and write interpretive materials. The successful candidate will have expertise in 18th- to early 20th-century American art and familiarity with local libraries and archives. The Research Assistant will assist with installation planning, researching new acquisitions, and supporting curatorial projects. This position is projected to end on June 30, 2026, with the possibility of renewal.
Responsibilities:
- Conducts research related to works in LACMA’s permanent collection of American Art painting and sculpture
- Assists with collections documentation and maintains shared research files
- Produces online and in-gallery didactics, as well as bibliographies and exhibition histories
- Attends meetings related to the installation of the new David Geffen Galleries
- Provides administrative support and coordinate with internal LACMA departments
Benefits:
- The expected hourly rate for this Los Angeles, CA based position is $23.00-$25.00, subject to change.
Qualifications:
- M.A. in Art History (ABD preferred)
- Advanced knowledge of American art, specifically eighteenth-, nineteenth-, and early twentieth-century painting and sculpture
- Some past experience in a museum curatorial department, including fellowships or internships, or related experience
- Demonstrated experience conducting archival research
- Familiarity with research resources, local libraries and archives, and databases
