What are the responsibilities and job description for the Collections Center Relocation Registrar position at Museum of Fine Arts?
The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, seeks a full-time Collections Center Relocation Registrar to fill a fixed-term position anticipated to end in spring 2028.
Under the general direction of the Director of Registration and Collections Management, and reporting to the Collections Manager:
Lead the organization and implementation of the collections move from the current offsite location to the new Collections Center.
Essential Functions:
• Plan and implement the relocation of collections housed at current offsite location to the new Collections Center.
• Work with MFA staff, vendors, and consultants to develop, plan, and complete safe packing for the move.
• Work with MFA staff, vendors, and consultants to develop secure transit plans and schedule shipments of artwork to Collections Center.
• Hire, train, and supervise staff assisting with the move to Collections Center.
• Work with collections database stakeholders to coordinate documentation of object movement, including barcoding of artworks, and object inventory documentation, including photography, as needed.
• Track costs, approve invoices, plan future budgets, and review contracts with vendors as needed.
• Work within department and cross departmentally with curators, conservators, Facilities staff, and consultants to design workspaces and storage spaces in Collections Center.
• Communicate effectively with all stakeholders inside and outside the Museum.
• Compile documentation and statistics about the move for reporting purposes, and present to staff and Trustees concerning project as requested.
• Participate with departmental staff in scheduling and space use conversations to accomplish goals and meet deadlines.
• Respond quickly and effectively in crisis situations to ensure safety of MFA staff and collections while in transit or onsite.
• Comply with MFA Collections Policy and other procedures, and have knowledge of and preserve highly confidential information.
Secondary Functions:
• Participate in and comply with the TSA’s CCSF Program.
• Participate in additional training as needed to remain current with industry standards.
• Attend conferences, and consult with and manage vendor relationships.
• Act as liaison with MFA departments, boards, colleagues, agencies, vendors, visitors, the public, and others.
• Travel as courier with individual loans or exhibitions.
• Perform other related duties as required or directed.
Qualifications:
• Must be precise and highly organized, have excellent communication and relationship management skills, and work well as part of a team
• Must have a Bachelor’s degree in art-related field or equivalent knowledge and experience
• 5-7 years of museum registrar experience preferred; must have demonstrated experience with collections moves, art handling and packing
• Must have project management experience and experience developing a budget and managing costs
• Ability to execute, with caution and good judgment, some physical work, including but not limited to placing dollies under crates, carrying boxes and objects of approximately 25 pounds, moving around large warehouse spaces, and standing on shipping dock for extended periods
• Proficiency in working with electronic data/collections databases required
• Ability to perform tasks in professional manner and with discretion when working with confidential records
• Ability to travel nationally and internationally; must have a driver’s license and an automobile for transportation between MFA locations
Salary Range:
Full-Time Salary, 35 hours per week
