Mustang Special Utility District (Mustang) is a local governmental entity providing water and water reclamation utility service in Denton, Collin, and Grayson Counties of North Texas. We are the largest Special Utility District in Texas and in one of the fastest-growing areas of the country. Comprising over 38,000 connections over 220 sq. miles. Our motto is Second to None! The Pump Operator at Mustang Special Utility District plays a critical role in ensuring the reliable operation of water and water reclamation systems. This position involves operating, monitoring, and maintaining pumping equipment to support water distribution and wastewater collection processes. The Pump Operator performs routine inspections, troubleshoots system issues, and adheres to all safety and regulatory standards to ensure the efficient delivery of services to the community. This role contributes to Mustangs mission of providing exceptional public service and maintaining operational excellence.
Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities:

- Pump Operation and Monitoring: Operate and monitor pumps, motors, and related equipment to ensure proper functioning and water flow throughout the system.
- System Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance, lubrication, and adjustments on pumps, valves, and pipelines to maintain efficiency and prevent breakdowns.
- Inspection and Troubleshooting: Conduct regular inspections of equipment and infrastructure to identify potential issues and implement corrective measures as needed.
- Data Recording and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of pump operation, water usage, and system performance; submit detailed reports to supervisors.
- Safety Compliance: Follow all safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to regulatory and organizational standards.

- Inventory Management: Track and manage inventory of spare parts, tools, and supplies required for pump operation and maintenance.

Position Specifications:
This position is classified as Non-Exempt under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is subject to the organizations policies and procedures pertaining to overtime hours.
Education:
Required:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Basic knowledge of pump operations, water systems, or related mechanical systems obtained through coursework, training programs, or equivalent work experience.
Preferred:
- Completion of post-secondary coursework in water utility operations, mechanical engineering, or a related technical field.
- Associates degree in Water Technology, Environmental Science, or a similar discipline.
Certification:
Required:
- Valid Texas Class "C" Drivers License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
- TCEQ Class "D" Water Operator License (or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment).
Preferred:
- TCEQ Class "C" Water Operator License or higher.
- OSHA safety certifications (e.g., Confined Space Entry, Hazard Communication, or equivalent).
Experience:
Required:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in water utilities, pump operations, or maintenance of mechanical systems.
- Hands-on experience with troubleshooting and maintaining pumps, motors, and valves.
Preferred:
- 4 or more years of progressively responsible experience in water or wastewater operations.
- Experience in a municipal or governmental utility setting.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Comprehensive knowledge of water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, and pumping operations.
- Familiarity with the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of pumps, motors, valves, and related mechanical equipment.
- Understanding of local, state, and federal regulations related to water utility operations, including TCEQ standards.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures, including confined space entry, lockout/tagout, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Basic understanding of electrical and mechanical systems used in water utilities.
