As a Paralegal at Mississippi United to End Homelessness (MUTEH), you will play a vital role in supporting attorneys and clients by providing administrative, research, and case management assistance. Your responsibilities will include conducting client intake interviews, drafting legal documents, assisting with case preparation, and maintaining accurate case records. You will work closely with attorneys and other team members to ensure efficient and effective delivery of legal services to low-income veterans experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness.
Key Responsibilities:
Client Intake and Assistance:
- Conduct initial intake interviews with veteran clients to gather relevant information and assess their legal needs.
- Assist clients with completing intake forms, gathering documents, and providing information about available legal services and resources.
- Schedule appointments, follow up with clients, and maintain communication to ensure timely and effective assistance.
Legal Research and Document Preparation:
- Conduct legal research using online databases, court records, and other resources to support attorneys in case preparation and analysis.
- Draft and prepare legal documents, including pleadings, motions, petitions, and correspondence, under the supervision of attorneys.
- Assist with document review, organization, and indexing to facilitate case management and preparation for hearings and trials.
Case Management and Administrative Support:
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date case files, including electronic and physical documents, correspondence, and notes.
- Coordinate communication and information sharing between attorneys, clients, and external stakeholders, such as courts, government agencies, and service providers.
- Assist with scheduling appointments, court appearances, and meetings, and ensure all deadlines and timelines are met in a timely manner.
- Provide administrative support to attorneys, such as managing calendars, making travel arrangements, and preparing expense reports.
Outreach and Community Engagement:
- Assist with outreach activities to promote awareness of available legal services and resources for low-income veterans experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness.
- Participate in community events, workshops, and presentations to educate veterans and community members about their legal rights and options.
- Help develop and distribute informational materials and resources to support client empowerment and access to justice.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in paralegal studies, legal studies, or a related field is preferred.
- Previous experience working as a paralegal or legal assistant in a law firm, legal clinic, or non-profit organization is desirable.
- Knowledge of legal principles and procedures, with a strong understanding of civil or criminal litigation, housing law, veterans' rights, or related areas.
- Proficiency in legal research and writing, with the ability to draft and prepare legal documents accurately and efficiently.
- Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to interact professionally and empathetically with clients, attorneys, and stakeholders.
- Proficiency in Apple iWork suite and legal software applications, such as Westlaw or LexisNexis, is preferred.
- Commitment to serving low-income and vulnerable populations, with a passion for social justice and advocacy.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team in a fast-paced, client-focused environment.
- Fluency in additional languages, especially Spanish or American Sign Language, is a plus.
