Position Summary

The Manager of Legal Project Management & Analytics will assist lawyers and firm leadership with exemplary client service through the development of advanced pricing strategies and comprehensive matter and portfolio management. This postion is expected to understand the Firm's business goals and support lawyers in the development of profitable pricing arrangements, efficient delivery of legal services, and added value to clients. This includes analyzing financial data, creating PowerBI and Excel-based financial reports, utilizing project management methodologies and tools, building client communication tools (such as communication plans, client extranets and dashboards), and offering suggestions and advice for improvement. This position will partner with practice groups providing strategic directions, improve key performance indicators and provide best in the industry value add services. The Manager of LPM & Analysis will manage a team of LPM/Pricing professionals providing strategic guidance and developing LPMs.

This postion requires a keen understanding of alternative pricing arrangements, legal project management tools and principles and the proper rigor to apply to a given legal matter (or portfolio) to ensure best results and/or drive improvement. The ability to demonstrate significant intuitive flexibility in the choice and application of various finance, project and legal process management disciplines and tools (depending on the type of engagement), and the real and acknowledged needs for matter management of the legal team is required.

To be successful in this role, the Manager must be able to take a long-term view with regard to the successful adoption and acceptance of legal project management and the Firm as a whole. The ideal candidate will take time to understand the pressures and complexities of certain matter types and markets, utilizing this data to assist in streamlining processes of the legal team. The candidate must be comfortable working with - and leading - teams of Partners, Associates and other legal personnel. Additionally, the candidate must be adept at navigating complex, high-pressure environments. The candidate will also interact directly with clients, maintaining and fostering positive relations while working on administrative and legal matters. The ideal candidate will lead and participate in multiple firmwide projects.

Job Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assist legal teams in defining project scope, goals and objectives and deliverables that support business needs of the Firm and our clients.
  • Negotiate rate and fee agreements with clients and prepare Partners for similar discussions.
  • Manage significant client matters/projects involving a number of resources, including client representatives, legal resources, project managers and technology.
  • Analyze data from Reed Smith financial systems and create PowerBI or Excel-based financial reports.
  • Compare matter progress to budget and convey status to Firm attorneys and clients.
  • Assist with the development of large-scale budget and matter work plans and configure our current matter management system to underpin the execution of the plans.
  • Estimate the resources needed to achieve project goals and provide input in the budget-creation and matter work plan creation process.
  • Consult on the use of pricing methods and alternative fee and value-based billing arrangements as needed.
  • Consult on the use of altnernative staffing approaches and automation where needed.
  • Define project success criteria and disseminate data to involved parties throughout project lifecycle.
  • Effectively communicate project expectations and status to firm attorneys and clients in a timely and clear fashion.
  • Develop full-scale project timelines, project plans, project charter, process maps, roles and responsibilities chart (RACI), communication, risk management plans and reporting templates.
  • Proactively manage changes in scope, identify potential risks and devise contingency plans as appropriate.
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently, juggling priorities, deadlines and essential project management duties for each respective project.
  • Partner with firm clients to set up best practices, providing transparency and predictability in a project or multiple ongoing projects.
  • Create and complete internal and external "after action reports" to facilitate the continuous improvement of the execution of our legal project management program and legal work at large.
  • Develop a keen understanding of law firm profitability metrics and key performance indicators - and how they interrelate - and demonstrate the ability to discuss those metrics with firm attorneys and clients.
  • Make recommendations to attorney teams on how to improve client and matter profitability metrics.
  • Build, develop and grow business relationships vital to the success of the project.
  • Partner with the Firm's Knowledge Management, Innovation, Client Intelligence and Business Development groups to execute strategy and achieve program success.
  • Conduct training on project management, pricing, process improvement, profitability and value services both at the Firm and client level.
  • Strategize with Client Value team regarding Firm initiatives to drive efficiency and profitability.
  • Liaise with designated Practice Group Leaders, develop strategic plan for pricing and legal project management within practice group and execute on agreed upon strategies.
  • Partner wtih Practice Group Leaders to improve revenue, profitability and other Firm key performance indicators.
  • Serve as Project Manager and lead Firmwide projects in fields of technology, efficiency, etc.
  • Assist and develop best practices managing global workflow across multiple teams.
  • Manage, train and develop team of Pricing and Legal Project Management professionals.
  • Provide strategic direction and workflow for direct reports.
  • Work with Client Value Leadership to create and execute global team strategy and execution of key initiatives.
  • Lead key firm initiatives creating project plan, managing timelines and working across multiple departments and global personnel.
  • Partner with key legal operational professional groups to further Reed Smith Client Value brand and offerings.

Requirements

Education: Bachelor's Degree required.

Experience: 5 years of experience in project management, pricing, legal, or marketing fields preferred. Experience in financial or technology field welcomed. Experience within a large law firm, corporate legal department or professional service firm sector a plus.

Proficient in MS Office Suite. Knowledge of PowerBI, Teams and SharePoint is a plus.

Ability to supervise multiple projects at one time, while also delegating projects to other team members when needed.

Ability to supervise direct reports in a remote environment.

Ability to thrive within a fast-paced business environment.

Keen problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities and solutions-oriented thinking.

Ability to extract financial data related to Firm projects and initiatives and then be able to interpret and present it in forms such as charts or reports for a diverse audience, including Senior Management.

Energetic and hands-on, with a strong bias for action, and receptive to ongoing coaching and development with the goal of delivering outstanding results.

Ability to manage multiple concurrent assignments to meet project deadlines. A highly motivated team player that contributes to an atmosphere in which people work together to produce outstanding results.

Excellent interpersonal skills. A good listener with outstanding interpersonal qualities and has the ability to present their views in a clear and compelling manner and does not shy away from having sometimes difficult conversations regarding matter performance to reach Firm goals of increasing margin and efficiency.

Working Conditions: Works in a typical office and/or remote setting. Required to work in the office at minimum 3 days per week. Occasionally called upon to work hours in excess of normal daily schedule.

Pay Ranges

This represents the presently-anticipated low and high end of Reed Smith's pay range for this position. Actual pay may vary based on various factors, including but not limited to location and experience.

  • Chicago, Philadelphia: $118,500 - $145,000
  • Princeton, Washington, DC: $126,000 - $155,000
  • New York, Los Angeles: $130,500 - $160,000
  • San Francisco: $138,000 - $170,000
