SCHEDULE: Full-time; 36 hours per week; Monday - Friday; Takes surgery call on as needed basis
The Perioperative Nurse Manager plans, directs, supervises and manages nursing activities in the delivery of quality, cost-effective patient care in the perioperative areas (operating room, endoscopy, pre-op, Phase II Recovery and recovery room). He/she coordinates surgery activities and programs with other hospital services and involved physicians. He/she assumes 24 hour clinical and management responsibility for the perioperative area. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) general operations (patient care, staff, supplies/equipment); policies and procedures; quality improvement/quality assurance activities; member of Nursing Quality Improvement and Nurse Managers team.
Graduate from an approved professional Nursing Program and a baccalaureate degree in nursing preferred. A willingness to pursue this goal is acceptable. Current Iowa license. Certification in Basic Life Support is required within 3 months of date of hire. Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification is required within 12 months of date of hire. Management/supervisory experience preferred, but not necessary. Understands and utilizes the nursing process; Possesses technical skills and knowledge of equipment mechanisms necessary to deliver quality nursing care; Demonstrates knowledge of and commitment to policies and procedures of Nursing Service and the Hospital and Clinic.
Supervises, coordinates and evaluates the operations and organization of the perioperative area to provide quality patient care and efficient and effective utilization of staff, supplies and equipment. Demonstrates knowledge of hospital and nursing service policies and procedures and nursing trends related to perioperative nursing. Assesses needs (staffing, equipment, supplies, programs, etc) of surgery and makes proposals for changes to Chief Nurse Officer. Develops, implements and evaluates goals, policies and procedures, standards of practice and new programs for surgery with approval of CNO. Reviews/revises policies and procedures yearly and as needed. Maintains adequate staffing and scheduling to provide continuity of care. Provides staff with ongoing feedback regarding performance in the perioperative area. Assists in developing and is accountable for department's budget. Serves as positive role model and resource person to staff. Demonstrates ability to assume leadership, circulating nurse, and recovery room nurse role in surgery supervises RNs, LPNs, CMAs, CNAs and surgery techs, and Sterile Processing Generalist. Delegates appropriately and effectively. Makes clinical decisions independently and in collaboration with peers based on scientific principles, systematic approach and experience.
