Job Title: Educational Assistant III, Special Education (SPED)
Reports To: SpEd Teacher and Director/Principal
Classification: Full Time, Classified, 10-month, Exempt from Civil Service

SUMMARY
Provides assistance to professional educators, counselors, social workers, and others by performing a variety of academic and non-academic instruction-related and/or counseling or guidance support tasks; and performs other related duties as assigned.
Responsible for contributing to and implementing the school’s vision and mission of being an Agri-Science project-based learning community committed to bringing forth academic excellence with the Hawaiian culture, practices, and values as the guiding principle.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Instruction Related Tasks
- Provide reinforcement lessons and repetitive drill activities for the concept/process/skills being addressed.
- Assist students with drill/practice activities and provide additional activities as needed by the students. Provide appropriate correction and/or clarification.
- Supervise independent study activities or small groups, as planned and prescribed by the teacher/educational professional, by providing task instruction, feedback to questions and answers, and follow-up assignments.
- Conduct initial correction of students' written assignments for subsequent grading by teacher/educational professional and to ensure timely feedback to students.
- Report observations on student progress, learning behavior, instructional needs, etc. to teacher/educational professional. Make recommendations as to follow-up activities and the need for further assistance to the student.
- Conduct other direct instructional activities as planned and prescribed by the teacher/educational professional.
- Administer group/individual assessment instruments and give make-up tests. Correct using answer keys provided by the teacher/educational professional.
- Locate and/or prepare instructional materials and resources requested by teachers/educational professionals to support instructional objectives.
- Gather, record, and maintain pertinent data on students as required by the teacher/educational professional.
Student Supervision/Classroom Management Supervise before, during, and after class activities including tutoring sessions, examinations, enrichment activities, detention, independent study, classroom management, recess, and after school.*
- Supervise students during excursions, field trips, assemblies, fire drills, and other school activities.
- Manage student behavior by explaining school rules, encouraging students to conform to appropriate behavior, mediating arguments and classroom situations, etc.
Clerical Support Tasks Type memorandum, correspondence, reports, lessons, quizzes, student records and forms, lists, purchase orders, requests for repairs or maintenance, office supplies, etc. Maintain a variety of files, records, logs, etc.

- Prepare and maintain student records, forms, program cards, folders, transcripts, test scores, etc.
- Compile numerical or statistical data for tables, charts, etc. Complete totals and other summaries.
- Prepare simple reports as directed.
- Duplicate a variety of materials using an automatic copier or duplicating machine; sort into various groupings or sequences, or as directed.
- Contact parents as directed by the teacher/educational professional to provide or obtain information.
Ancillary Duties. Demonstrate flexibility in meeting with supervisor throughout the day as requested and adjusting priorities and workflow as needed. * Assist teacher/educational professional with the logistics of field trips/student activities, etc.
- Operate a variety of equipment/instruments common to the program area assigned.
- Participate in parent-teacher/educational professional conferences by providing input on student performance, progress, behavior, etc. as observed during school activities.
- Maintain inventory of instructional resources and materials appropriate to the program area.
- Participate in meetings, workshops, and other training activities to keep abreast of current methods and techniques relating to the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position.
- Create and maintain bulletin boards. Create other classroom displays and materials (i.e., visual aids, posters, charts, etc.).
Perform other related duties as assigned.Ensures that confidentiality is maintained in accordance with the contract, State, and Federal law including HIPAA.Conducts work in a safe and responsible manner, utilizing protective clothing and/or equipment when appropriate. Complies with all safety standards.
Responsible for awareness of and adherence to all school and safety policies and procedures.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree, Associates Degree, or certificate with a minimum score of 459 on the ParaPro Assessment. Experience working with children. Eligibility is determined by the Department of Education.
Must be ethical and honest. Must have excellent interpersonal, organizational, time management, follow-through, and oral and written communication skills. Must be extremely flexible and able to work independently. Must be knowledgeable and comfortable working with technology and software programs, and be able to acquire additional skills for use of software, databases, or other information systems as necessary.
Must be able to meet professional obligations through efficient work habits such as meeting deadlines, honoring schedules, coordinating resources in an effective and timely manner, and demonstrating respect for others. Must be able to successfully analyze information, manage complexity, report results, enter data, and observe school and district policies as well as state and federal laws with attention to detail, confidentiality, and thoroughness. Understanding and familiarization with the Hawaiian culture, language, and practices desired.
Recommended Qualifications:
Knowledge of: Instruction and testing related methods and techniques; common academic, social, behavioral, and developmental problems of students; awareness of educational program goals, functions, and activities; standard English language communication skills in order to speak, read and write effectively; and basic arithmetic.
Skills/Abilities: Ability to conduct and monitor specific instruction-related, and testing routines; maintain computer and paper files; learn to use and assist others in using computer equipment, programs, and computer/paper files; write simple narrative reports; lead small group discussions, and develop rapport and maintain effective relationships with students and others.
COMMUNICATION, MENTAL AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Language Skills: Ability to speak, read and write effectively. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret written documentation. Ability to produce reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract; multiply and divide totals; determine percentages and fractions, and interpret same as may be appropriate.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, sit, read, talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The employee may spend long hours sitting and using office equipment including but not limited to computers, 10-key, telephones, copiers, and facsimiles. The employee will manipulate the mouse and keyboard. This includes repetitive motions and movements that frequently and regularly require using the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The employee must be able to move or carry job-related objects or materials and capable of reaching to obtain items such as books, printouts, and files.

COMPENSATION:
According to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.

All Charter School Employees are considered year-to-year temporary hires and employment are contingent upon funding and student enrollment.
