The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is seeking volunteers ages 18 to 65 for a local study in Pittsburgh, PA to assess how well respirators fit diverse face shapes and sizes.
Respirators are used in a wide range of occupations to help keep millions of workers protected from hazards in the workplace. To be effective, the respirator must seal almost entirely to the face, forcing inhaled breath to pass through the filtering media and not around the edges of the respirator. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires specific “fit tests” be performed to evaluate how well specific respirator models or designs seal to the face. NIOSH seeks individuals with diverse facial shapes and sizes to participate in fit tests on a continual basis.

What to expect:
- You will answer questions about your medical history to make sure that you can safely wear the respirator models being studied
- Your face will be measured by a researcher using calipers
- Available periodically, Monday through Friday, daylight hours for a period of 15 minutes to 4 hours depending on your availability and testing needed. You may be able to earn more than $50 per hour depending on the test
- Participants will generally be contacted one to three days before the test date. Participation is voluntary and there is no obligation
- You will perform simple head and arm movements and some bending at the waist while being exposed to a non-hazardous aerosol inside an 8’ x 10’ x 9’ room
- You must be clean shaven for each visit
- You may experience breathing resistance as your inhaled breath passes through the respirator. You may also experience claustrophobia or your skin under the respirator feeling warm
- All aspects of testing will be clearly explained
- Your participation will inform how different respirator models and designs fit the full spectrum of U.S. workforce to ensure that all workers are adequately protected
