General Statement of DutiesPerforms responsible work, in the installation, replacement, repair, maintenance and operations of water and sewer systems and related appurtenances; performs related work as required. Distinguishing Features of the ClassAn employee in this class reads meters and performs a variety of tasks individually and as a member of a crew engaged in the operation and maintenance of the collection and distribution systems. Work involves participation in the installation, replacement, and repair of water and sewer pipes to specific grade and depth. Work includes making taps to water and sewer mains, installing hydrants, meters, and valves; and making repairs to the water and sewer system. Employees are subject to working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, rain, snow, confined spaces, from heights, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. Work is also subject to the final standards of OSHA on blood borne pathogens. Employee may be required to wear a respirator. Employee is required to complete rotating standby/recall work. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation and inspection for adherence to instructions, standard trade and safety practices, and annual performance reviews.FLSA StatusThis is a non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime and compensatory time in accordance with Town policy.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Reads water meters using a handheld computer; enters readings into the computer; follows established route; works in all weather; operates radio read equipment to collect meter readings.Works independently to complete work requests to connect and disconnect water service, check for leaks, repair meters or related tasks.Checks wells; takes readings; checks chlorine; checks lift stations for proper operations and maintenance. Reports deficiencies to supervisor. Works as a member of a crew to assist with making water and sewer taps; repairs water and sewer lines, meters, valves, and hydrants.Operates medium to heavy construction equipment including back hoes, loaders, dump trucks, tamps, and other related equipment.Participates in cutting grass at public grounds using push and riding mowers and trimmers.Unstops sewer lines jetter machines, and combination jetter/vacuum machines, Makes simple records of work activities; prepares drawings and measures to allow for updating of utility maps.Performs related duties as required.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver’s License. Possession of a Class B North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License within 6 months of employment.
