A veterinary assistant plays a vital daily role in our hospital, truly acting as a frontline member in the assessment and medical care of our patients. Our veterinary assistants also play a critical role with client communication - without communicating clearly and effectively the medical and dietary needs of our patients after they return home, we cannot reasonably expect good outcomes for our patients or their families. The following is a list of some of the many duties provided by our veterinary assistant staff members:
Position Responsibilities:
A veterinary assistant plays a vital daily role in our hospital, truly acting as a frontline member in the assessment and medical care of our patients. Our veterinary assistants also play a critical role with client communication - without communicating clearly and effectively the medical and dietary needs of our patients after they return home, we cannot reasonably expect good outcomes for our patients or their families. The following is a list of some of the many duties provided by our veterinary assistant staff members:
Position Responsibilities:
- Obtains history and puts history into electronic patient care system (EzyVet)
- Assists veterinarian and Veterinary Technician in all aspects of care
- Restraint for physical examination, discussing estimate and plan with clients, carrying out diagnostics, procedures, and medication administration
- Patient diagnostics, procedures and treatment may include: IV catheter placement, blood work, urinalysis, radiographs, sedation, medication administration (SQ, IM, IV routes of administration), medication dose calculation, knowledge of medication adverse effects
- Discharges patients including filling medication prescriptions, ensuring diagnostics and medications are complete, educating clients on at-home care, going over discharge instructions with clients
Skills and Qualifications:
- Skills in veterinary triage, diagnostics, and nursing
- Training is provided, but the candidate must have 1 years of animal-related experience.
- Must have strong veterinary medical knowledge and understanding of common disease processes and pharmacology
- Must be able to perform quick and efficient diagnostics, treatment, and procedures
- Must be exemplary in customer service, critical thinking, team-oriented attitude
Other Position Responsibilities:
- Set-up/tear-down patient beds for patients
- Laundry
- Cleaning (sweeping, mopping, dishes, etc)
- Changing bedding and cleaning cages
- General hospital care (Clean/scoop lawn, empty trash receptacle, replace bags, etc)
