Job Description

Job Summary:

The Purchasing Manager will oversee the activities of the purchasing and inventory control department. The Manager will coordinate, organize and oversee all activities involved in the identifying sources, acquisition of product and managing the life cycle of inventory.

Managerial Responsibilities:

  • Recruits, interviews, hires, trains, mentors and manages the purchasing team.
  • Oversees the daily workflow and schedules of the department.
  • Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
  • Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Manages the product procurement for the company.
  • Maintains knowledge of industry, trends, prices, suppliers, and delivery conditions to anticipate future product availability; directs purchasing programs accordingly.
  • Negotiates pricing, contracts, delivery terms, order quantities with vendors for optimal cost and delivery times.
  • Assesses current product availability; reasonably forecasts future availability based on the market, suppliers, delivery, and other variables.
  • Reviews purchase orders and contracts for compliance with company policies.
  • Collaborates with sales, product development, and warehouse departments to maximize efficiency in the purchasing process, receiving and inventory control.
  • Communicates with suppliers to resolve problems that may arise regarding delivery, quality, price, or conditions of sale.
  • Sets authorization limits for purchasing staff.
  • Purchases large and complex items.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures related to purchasing and inventory control with a goal to maximize inventory turn, reduce backorders and optimize workflow.
  • Monitors the performance of suppliers, assessing their ability to meet pricing, quantity, quality and delivery requirements.
  • Identifies, qualifies and develops new and alternative suppliers in collaboration with the product development team.
  • Maintains required inventory to support company sales while improving inventory turn and return on investment.
  • Continual analysis of inventories and procedures; suggests improvements to increase inventory turn, reduce back orders and increase profitability for the company.
  • Develops and enforces vendor policies to maintain compliance, increase efficiency and ensure quality.
  • Identifies optimal shipment and transportation methods to reduce shipping costs and improve warehouse efficiency.
  • Negotiates prices for delivery with suppliers, vendors, and/or shipping companies.
  • Manages the import process including HTS verification, import freight costs, maintenance of HTS codes, bi-annual review of HTS reclassifications.
  • Maintains knowledge of current ADD/CVD or tariff petitions and rulings and adjusts pricing accordingly.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills with a proven ability to create and maintain positive working relationships with vendors, suppliers, and shippers.
  • Strong managerial and leadership skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Thorough understanding of company products, industry suppliers and logistics.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new company software programs.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related field.
  • Seven to 10 years of purchasing experience both domestic and import required with managerial experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • May be asked to travel to visit vendors.

Salary:

  • Salary will be commensurate with experience.
