Art Instructor (Teaching Artist)
-Adult Fine Art Programs in Drawing/Painting/Mixed Media/Fiber
-Programs for Children including After School and Weekend Art
Part-Time: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, or Saturdays 9 am - 4 pm or 5 – 8 pm
Compensation: $25 - $35 per hour to commensurate with experience
Location: The Manes Art Education Center at Nassau County Museum of Art
The Manes Art Education Center at Nassau County Museum of Art is seeking Art Instructors/Teaching Artists to teach and implement fine art classes for participants of varying ages and abilities in our fine artmaking space on the Museum’s grounds. The right candidates must have a background in Visual Art or Art Education and be able to effectively teach and maintain a positive and supportive creative environment. This position reports directly to the Director of The Manes Art Education Center at Nassau County Museum of Art.
Responsibilities include:
Art Class Instructor
- Facilitates fine art class(es) in the Center’s art studios to participants of varying levels
- Provides a syllabus and list of required materials for each class to the center’s Director and staff
- Maintains a pleasant studio environment for program/art class participants
- Provides necessary support and effectively communicates the lessons and proper use of art materials to program attendees or participants
- Promotes and markets their art classes and programs on their professional social media and mailing lists
- Shares photos and videos of classes and programs for marketing and advertising to the Center’s staff
- Set-up and clean-up of art classes including moving and setting-up of chairs, tables, easels, and other art studio furnishings and equipment for their respective classes
- Maintains general cleanliness of art studios including light sweeping and wiping surfaces
Qualifications & Skills Required:
- BFA, MFA in Visual Arts or BA, MA in Art Education is required
- A consistent studio practice with a strong background in drawing and painting
- Excellent time and classroom management skills
- Strong verbal communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with program attendees of all ages and abilities
- Must be comfortable with recent technologies
- Must have a good sense of humor
Typical Physical and Social Requirements:
- Requires the ability to operate general art studio equipment and move various chairs, tables, boxes, and art supplies.
- Must exhibit strong people skills and be comfortable interacting with the public
- While much of the work is performed inside, some outdoor work is required during various programs
- Requires the ability to communicate verbally and in writing with management, staff, and the public
