Job Description
Western Michigan University seeks a communications professional who has mastered the art of storytelling, excels at editing and can make compelling copy and images more engaging through skillful content curation. The successful candidate will apply these skills to managing the University’s news site, flagship magazine and other communication channels, working collaboratively with content creators of all kinds in the Office of Marketing and Strategic Communications and across campus.
This is an in-person position. However, WMU has a telecommuting and hybrid work policy that allows employees to work remotely up to one day per week at their supervisor’s discretion. Please view Telecommuting and Hybrid Work Schedule Policy for more details.

Job Requirements
General summary: Manages the WMU news site and other communication channels administered by the Office of Marketing and Strategic Communications, helping to deploy University content in a manner that engages and informs internal and external audiences.
- Edits, manages, distributes and may create content for University communications, including WMU News, WMU Magazine, social media and executive communications.
- Ensures content is strategically distributed through the most effective University channels to align with objectives and target audiences.
- Guides content creators in developing compelling stories and visuals that elevate the University’s brand messages.
- Curates content from campus news and communication sites for broader distribution through WMU News and other channels, including social media.
- Directs other communication projects as needed.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in related field from an accredited institution.
- Three years' relevant experience.
- Experience working in a news-oriented environment as an editor, writer, producer or reporter.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to think both analytically and creatively and from the perspective of a given target audience.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks.
- Strong newswriting skills and ability to adhere to Associated Press writing style.
- Eight years of experience in a news-oriented environment as an editor, writer, producer or reporter.
