IT Database Engineer

Statement of the Position:

The Database Engineer role focuses on designing, implementing, and optimizing SQL server and database solutions to support National Seating & Mobility’s complex operational needs. This position involves leading database architecture, resolving advanced issues, and driving performance enhancements. The Database Engineer plays a strategic role in ensuring the security, scalability, and reliability of organizational data systems while mentoring junior engineers and contributing to business-critical projects.

Duties and Responsibilities / Essential Functions:

• Database Architecture and Optimization
  • Design and implement scalable database architectures to support current and future business needs.
  • Perform advanced analysis and optimization of database queries, indexes, and stored procedures.
  • Lead efforts in database migrations, upgrades, and high-availability solutions.

• Advanced Troubleshooting and Issue Resolution
  • Resolve complex database issues, including performance bottlenecks and system failures. 
  • Provide expert-level technical support for database-related escalations.
• Collaboration and Leadership
  • Collaborate with development, analytics, and infrastructure teams to align database solutions with business objectives.
  • Mentor and guide junior database engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for database systems, standards, and processes.

• Data Security and Compliance
  • Ensure databases meet stringent security and compliance standards.
  • Develop and maintain robust disaster recovery and backup strategies for critical systems.

• Cross-Functional Strategy and Support
  • Partner with business units to deliver database solutions that enhance reporting, analytics, and operational efficiency.
  • Act as a senior technical advisor to leadership on database-related projects and innovations.

• On-Call and Availability
  • Participate in on-call rotation to address critical database issues and ensure uptime of key systems.

Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. There is a possibility for overtime and on-call rotation hours.

Required Education, Experience & Competencies:

Formal Education & Certification

• Bachelor’s degree in information technology or related field, or equivalent experience.
• Database certifications for Azure, AWS, and/or Microsoft are a plus.

Knowledge & Experience

• 6-8 years of experience in database administration and architecture.
• Proficient in SQL/T-SQL and ETL.
• Proficient in Azure or AWS platform.
• Experience with Data Modeling and Python.
• Demonstrated leadership in managing large-scale database projects and complex environments.
• Extensive knowledge of enterprise database architecture, security, and management.
• Strong leadership and project management skills.
• Excellent communication and strategic thinking abilities.
