Position Title: NSBE Summer Engineering Experience for Kids Mentor

Hourly Rate: $17.00 (1 Week of Training/3 Program Weeks – 40 hours/per Week)

POSITION SUMMARY
The Summer Engineering Experience for Kids Mentors are the foundation of the program. NSBE is currently seeking dynamic and passionate individuals to join our team as mentors. Mentors are responsible for leading a fun, engaging, and rigorous engineering curriculum for students. Mentors work alongside a Lead Mentor to manage classrooms of 20-30 students while providing introductory lessons to STEM concepts. Mentors serve as role models for students through academic and ethical leadership in the classroom, which strongly aligns with the Core Values of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). Also, Mentors embody the NSBE mission in their everyday engagement with students while executing the program's goals.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Training Requirements:
- Participate in Mentor training
- Complete all pre-training materials prior to the start of the program
Mentor Operations
- Utilize creative teaching methods to make complex STEM concepts engaging for all students
- Teach general math and science concepts to students at an appropriate age level, given the curriculum
- Assist students in building items utilizing STEM curriculum
- Prepare students for competitions, including presentation (written, physical, oral.)
- Create and lead classroom games for down times
- Supervise bathroom, lunch, and snack times
- Direct students to on-site nurse when needed
- Manage student behavior and deploy gentle discipline techniques if necessary (specific instruction will be provided during training)
- Actively participate in ALL group meetings with other classroom mentors
- Proactively plan lessons for your classroom with other mentors
- Participate in ALL mentors debrief meetings, training, and orientation sessions
- Track student attendance daily
- Provide appropriate feedback to parents if solicited
QUALIFICATIONS
- Age 18 or older
- Be a local candidate
- Agree to have a criminal background check performed (results must be successful)
- Pursuing or have successfully obtained an undergraduate degree, degree in a STEM or education field preferred
- Active, paid NSBE member, preferred
- Knowledge and support of NSBE’s mission
- Knowledge of the philosophies and objectives of Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) program
- Enrolled in/completed degree in an Engineering/STEM subject is a PLUS
- Passion for STEM education and a keen interest in fostering an appreciation for Engineering among young learners
- Prior experience in mentoring, teaching, or working with youth is desirable
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to connect with a diverse group of students
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Programs
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to interact with all levels of internal and external partners
- CPR/First Aid Certified, preferred
- Ability to support and lead a group of peers preferred.
- The ability to supervise and manage a group of children of various ages, preferred
- Previous experience with leading and providing instructions to K-12 students, preferred
