POSITION SUMMARY
The Youth Specialist I is responsible for supporting day to day operations for prevention and youth activities at the Community Wellness Department’s Youth Services Program. This includes supporting the athletics programs, after school programs, summer programs, tutoring activities, prevention activities and culturally-based programming. This position provides direct services to youth and interacts with families. Services are rooted in a holistic service provision model that integrates prevention, community-engagement, cultural-competence, and behavioral health treatment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Provide administrative support to the youth services program. This can include, organizing monthly youth services program calendar, prepping for activities and food, co-facilitating activities, supervision of youth participants, and supporting agency wide communication of activities available to youth and families.
2. Promote and uphold Youth Services rules and program guidelines to ensure standard of conduct is understood and maintained by participants.
3. Assist in shopping for and preparation of light meals or snacks for weekly program groups. Assist in the maintaining of efficient and hygienic use of the kitchen and pantry.
4. Provide coverage/support for drop-in hours of Youth Services Program, and assist in the coordination of culturally and age appropriate activities for participants during hours of operation
5. Work in tandem with Youth Program staff in implementation of Youth Services programming.
6. Assist program group facilitators in coordination of weekly groups as needed; obtain sign-in sheets, registration packets for new participants and acquire all necessary permission slips/paperwork from youth for special field trips or activities, coordinate back-up facilitation for all groups as needed.
7. Maintain flyers and sign-ups for area events (NAHC and non-NAHC) relevant to Bay Area Native American community and promote participation among Youth Service Program participants.
8. Support general purchasing duties, including processing check requisition paperwork, procuring appropriate documentation from consultants/providers, and tracking paperwork through internal agency systems to ensure timely delivery of payment.
9. Provide back-up administrative support for the CWD including; Greet all patients in a courteous and professional manner, facilitate patient flow in the CWD by answering telephone calls; preparing encounter forms; notifying clinical staff of patient arrivals in a timely manner, and register patients into the practice management system (NextGen) in a manner that ensures accuracy and thoroughness.
10. Ensure all youth have completed any required registration documentation. Support youth registration during activities and outings.
11. Dress in appropriate attire for the activities planned.
12. Support outreach efforts for Native youth on location in schools and at system partners such as juvenile justice, child welfare, etc. which may include (but not limited to) co-facilitating youth support circles, trainings and/or workshops.
13. Participate in relevant committees and workgroups on state, local, and national levels as an advocate and support for youth (not as the representative of youth voice).
14. Collaborate with other staff and youth participants to support the development of culturally competent materials and services for youth clients.
15. Member Care: Demonstrate understanding and apply working knowledge of safety policies and ensuring safe member practices.
16. Employee Safety: Safely performs all duties; follows required protective protocols to ensure personal safety as well the safety of others.
17. Must maintain compliance with ergonomic safety standards; be mindful of posture and regularly practice ergonomic stretches.
18. Quality Improvement: Actively participate in internal quality improvement teams and work with members proactively to drive quality improvement initiatives in accordance with the mission and strategic goals of the organization, federal and state laws and regulations, and accreditation standards, when assigned.
19. Work well under pressure, meet multiple and often competing deadlines.
20. At all times demonstrate cooperative behavior with supervisors, subordinates, colleagues, clients and the community.
21. Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Must have a high school diploma or its equivalent.
2. Strong organizational skills, with experience organizing collaboratively in youth-led organizing efforts, campaigns, meetings and events.
3. Willing and able to have a flexible schedule; and to be able to work effectively in changing environment.
4. Understanding of positive youth development principles and experience applying them to youth-serving organizations.
5. Understanding of youth-serving systems, including an understanding of these systems from the perspectives of youth being served.
6. Experience working with youth involved in multiple systems, especially community-based mental health, juvenile justice, foster care and/or child welfare systems.
7. Familiarity with local resources available to children, youth and families facing mental health challenges.
8. Possession of front country safety or ability to attain within six months of hire.
9. Ability to connect with youth, respect youth culture, and share power to foster a youth-led process.
10. Familiarity with the San Francisco Bay Area American Indian Community and Native-serving organizations.
11. Excellent social, writing and interpersonal skills.
12. Expertise with Windows 2000, Microsoft Office, Excel and Word.
13. Must meet standards of character under PL 101-630, section 408, Character Investigation, subsection (a) and PL 101-647, section 231, Requirement for Background Check, subsection (c), and agree that employer can contact the last two employers, the sex abuse detective division of local law enforcement and Child Protective Services of the last two counties in which the person has lived or worked to inquire as to the suitability of the person to work with children.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
14. 0-2 years equivalent fieldwork experience working with Native American youth in the San Francisco Bay Area.
15. Food preparation experience.
