Description Of Work

This position is located at Craven Correctional Institution located in Vanceboro, NC (Craven County). The facility is an adult male felon reception and diagnostic processing center which houses 850 inmates and employs 360 staff.

The primary purpose of this position is the assessment of all new offenders with any previous mental health interventions and undiagnosed patients. Evaluates, prioritizes and assigns mental health referrals. Develops treatment options and monitors effectiveness through record audits and case reviews. Coordinates services provided by the Staff Psychologists, Consulting Psychiatrists, and Medical Records Assistant. Ensures that the program meets treatment expectations while complying with policy and procedures. Determines and requests budget items and personnel needs required to run the mental health operations of the institution. Provides administrative supervision for the staff mental health evaluations; may be seen individually or in groups. This position also serves in crisis intervention situations. This position screens non-emergency referrals to determine their suitability for on-going mental health services. Must be able to maintain effective working relationship with all institutional staff.

Management Preferences

Previous correctional internship or experience, having worked in an inpatient setting or having a degree in clincal psychology. Training in personality and intelligence assessment.

To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:

  • Thorough knowledge of behavior dynamics and the psychological principles applying to intelligence, aptitude and personality assessment; of the selection, administration, and interpretation of a wide variety of psychological tests including personality inventories; of the principles and theories of psychotherapy and behavior modification.
  • Skill in interpreting diagnostic findings and preparing comprehensive reports; in determining and conducting appropriate therapy (counseling, psychotherapy or cognitive behavioral intervention); in relating expressively and dynamically with other people.
  • Skill in the administration and interpretation of psychological tests, and in directing the course of complex cognitive behavioral, support, and insight oriented psychotherapeutic interventions.
  • Skill in planning, directing, and coordinating therapeutic programs involving a sizable number of multidisciplinary staff.
  • Ability to organize work, and supervise and evaluate the work of other employees. Ability to train, coach, consult and mentor staff.

Eligibility for licensure in North Carolina under the provisions of the NC Psychology Practice Act (G.S. 90- 270) and one year of experience providing a full range of psychological testing and treatment, preferably in a correctional or juvenile justice program/facility.

The team of physicians, nurses, behavioral health services, dental services, psychiatric services, pharmacy services, and licensed healthcare administration services work together to provide emergent, acute, routine, and chronic health care, as well as preventive medicine at all prison facilities. They also coordinate with specialists and other clinical consultants outside of prisons throughout the state to ensure comprehensive health and well-being towards a safe transition from prison, improving public health, and decreasing recidivism.
