This is an anticipated vacancy.
This position will serve as the Bridge Maintenance Engineer for Division 13 which includes Buncombe, Madison, Yancey, McDowell, Burke, Mitchell, and Rutherford Counties. The duties of this position include planning, assigning, directing, and coordinating a number of physically dispersed bridge crews in maintenance, repair and replacement of bridges, drainage pipes exceeding forty-eight inches in diameter and box culverts. This position also manages and supervises all bridge maintenance and force account construction for the seven Division 13 counties in accordance with established policies and procedures. Knowledge of the principles of civil engineering and highway methods and techniques is needed. Considerable knowledge of the use and operation of all field and office engineering instruments; ability to understand, explain, and administer contracts; ability to interpret plans, provisions, and specifications; ability to interpret policies, procedures, and regulations; and ability to establish work relationships between the department and citizens is needed.

The ability to supervise and monitor the maintenance program to ensure efficient and safe use of personnel, equipment, and materials; to formulate a comprehensive bridge maintenance program within limits of budget; supervise and evaluate the performance of other employees; communicate effectively; maintain positive working relationships; and operate motor vehicle safely is needed. Work includes emergency situations, nights, and weekends. Must have the ability to traverse steep and uneven terrain. You will be subject to high volumes of traffic and extreme temperatures/weather conditions. Safety toe footwear will be needed.

- Experience in tracking cost expenditures in various transportation accounting systems.

- Experience in conducting meetings with employees, citizens, and public officials in order to conduct investigations and resolve various issues.
