    The Mission of the Department of Public Instruction :

    The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) is charged with implementing the state's public school laws for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade public schools at the direction of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and State Board of Education.

    The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is seeking applicants for an Associate State School Superintendent (Working Title : Chief Academic Officer) for our Deputy State Superintendent Office.

    Reporting directly to the Deputy State Superintendent of Public Instruction, the Chief Academic Officer (CAO) sets the strategic vision and direction for academic programs. The role develops a short and long-term academic vision and works to establish a culture of high expectation and shared responsibility for access to resources that support high quality academic performance. The CAO works to create authentic partnerships that ensure closer alignment of programs providing effective teaching and learning in every classroom, and to create conditions that ensure systemic improvement of practice over time in schools and Public School Units.

    The Chief Academic Officer is responsible for managing the regular course of business for the effective functioning of DPI’s academic program areas.

    The Chief Academic Officer is responsible for the oversight of academic areas such as, but not limited to :

    • Career and Technical Education
    • Special Education
    • Academic Standards
    • School / District Support Services
    • Federal Programs
    • Early Learning
    • Advanced Learning / Gifted Education
    • Charter Schools
    • NC Virtual Public Schools.
    • The primary purpose of the Chief Academic Officer is to supervise these and other key areas of academic programming at NCDPI. These areas are to provide the vision and resources to support the improvement of student achievement across the state. Utilizing a clear plan of action, key performance indicators, communication plans and various tools and resources, areas of academic programming can identify problems, analyze data, and draw conclusions. Subject matter experts in these areas of academic programming will employ a transparent and research-based approach to supporting Public School Units in educating knowledgeable, skilled and work / college ready students.

      This position is designated Exempt Policymaking.

    • Knowledge of best practices, and current knowledge on national trends and research for the instruction of diverse learners.
    • MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES :

    • A clear track record of improving academic outcomes for students and eliminating disparities in achievement, opportunities and services for students.
    • Ten years of supervisory / administrative / management experience in school administration, including knowledge of academic programming, preferably in a large school district or State Education Agency.
    • Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both.       PhD or Ed.D in curriculum and instruction or education administration from an appropriately accredited institution and ten years of progressively responsible leadership experience in public education, or Master's degree in Business Administration or Public Administration from an appropriately accredited institution and ten years of progressively responsible financial leadership experience in public education, or an equivalent combination of related training and experience.
