Job Description

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has an exciting career opportunity to serve as a Human Resources Specialist in Lincoln. Successful candidates will be energetic, driven, customer-focused, self-motivated, have a high personal standard of integrity and share in our mission of “Helping People Live Better Lives.”

This is a steppingstone position with the potential opportunity to promote and grow within our HR team. The HR Specialist plays a key role in assisting the HR Business Partner (HRBP) team in delivering HR solutions across the organization.

This position is responsible for providing operational, administrative, and strategic support to ensure the smooth functioning of the HRBP function. The HR Specialist will work closely with HRBPs to drive initiatives of DHHS.

A successful candidate will also have strong technical/computer skills or background.

Key Duties

  • Drive HR initiatives by collecting, analyzing, and maintaining critical data to support key functions like Unemployment claims, ADA compliance, and employee corrective actions, ensuring accuracy and efficiency every step of the way.
  • Showcase your exceptional writing skills, sharp attention to detail, and ability to juggle multiple priorities while fostering strong, positive relationships with employees and supervisors to create a collaborative and supportive workplace.
  • Some travel may be required.

Requirements/Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Two years of coursework or training in personnel management, business administration, public administration or office/administrative or three years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree or 4 years human resources experience.

Other: Valid driver's license or the ability to provide independent authorized transportation for work-related travel. Position is located on-site at the Nebraska State Office Building in Lincoln.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge of human resources/personnel practices, procedures and terminology; state and federal personnel/employment laws;
  • Knowledge of recruitment and hiring practices; and principles of progressive discipline.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships; and excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
