If unable to fill at the Highway Bridge Designer II level, NDOT will consider applicants at the Highway Bridge Designer I level.
Pay range for Highway Designer I: $23.140 - $34.111 per hour (with possible promotion as their experience grows). The pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints if approved.
Pay range for Highway Designer II: $26.744 - $39.424 per hour. The pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints if approved.
JOB DUTIES:
- Perform structural and geometric design work under the guidance of a Registered Professional Engineer (PE), applying engineering principles and best practices.
- Develop complex 2D and 3D Geometric Designs and Details using MicroStation for various bridge types across Nebraska’s highway system.
- Conduct independent design checks and detailed plan reviews to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to design specifications, and the Bridge Design Manual.
- Prepare detailed construction plans for bridge repairs, reinforced box culverts, retaining walls, energy dissipators, and standard highway bridge structures.
- Communicate design intent and structural details effectively using MicroStation, reviewing geometric layouts and component fits to ensure plans align with project specifications.
- Review bridge plans created by consultants for state and local projects, ensuring compliance with policies, standards, and design specifications.
- Collaborate with internal divisions, government agencies, utility companies, consultants, and contractors to facilitate proper plan preparation and address design or construction challenges.
- Accurately calculate and document bridge pay item quantities.
- Perform site inspections and respond promptly to field issues by providing practical, timely solutions.
- Review fabricator shop drawings to verify conformance with design plans and specifications, remaining engaged from conceptual design through project completion.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
Hwy Bridge Designer I: Coursework, training, or experience in reading or preparing bridge and/or roadway construction plans, and experience in using computer-aided drafting and design (CADD) applications and practices.
Hwy Bridge Designer II: Three years of experience in reading or preparing bridge and/or roadway construction plans, engineering design, or related bridge construction, and experience in using computer-aided drafting (CADD) applications and practices. Post-high school coursework or training in the design field mentioned above may substitute for two of the three years of experience required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S) degree in Design & Drafting Technology with a focus in Civil Engineering Technology or Architectural Technology.
- Experience or education in 3D CAD design.
- Four years of experience in bridge design and detailing.
- Extensive experience in reading and interpreting bridge and roadway construction plans.
- Strong commitment to regular and reliable attendance to fulfill job duties and responsibilities.
Other: Must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record or the ability to provide authorized independent transportation and be available for occasional overnight travel.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES
The ideal candidate for this position will demonstrate a broad range of skills and attributes essential for success. Key qualities include:
- Knowledge of NDOT's Bridge Design Manual and Standard Specifications for Highway Construction.
- Proficiency in the most current versions of at least one of the following CAD platforms: MicroStation, AutoCAD, or other design software.
- Familiarity with basic engineering principles related to the design and construction of highway projects.
- Knowledge of file storage and management platforms such as ProjectWise or OnBase.
- Effective communication skills with the ability to convey technical information clearly and work collaboratively with diverse teams.
- Strong time management, accountability, and ethical integrity in performing duties and meeting deadlines.
- High engagement, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn and grow personally and professionally by quickly adopting new concepts and technologies.
- Adaptability to dynamic environments and evolving industry practices.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
