Job Description:
Have you ever sat waiting to turn onto the road and wondered what planning goes into that house slowly driving by on the back of a truck? The Motor Carrier Permit Team can answer that question. This position is part of a small team of permit specialists who review all of the oversized/overweight load permit requests to verify if they satisfy statutory requirements to travel on the roadway. They also work with the Nebraska State Patrol and other Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) staff to make the big moves happen smoothly and safely so as not to damage the road.

Pay rate is $16.277/hr (July 1st: $17.254/hr).
JOB DUTIES:
Responsible for the issuance of overweight and/or over-dimensional truck permits that are required based on Nebraska State Statutes.
Utilization of permits by processing a web-based automated permit system.
Assist customers via email and phone with questions about the online permit system, State statutes, and NDOT Rules and Regulations that govern the issuance of truck permits.
To be on-call for two weeks on a rotation with other permit staff.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements/ Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Coursework/training in administrative/office support functions, procedures, and methods including the operation of personal computers and office equipment; or areas related to the programs and functions of the employing agency OR Experience in customer service or public contact; or applying criteria/regulations; and/or performing administrative/office/secretarial support work including use of personal computers and office equipment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in analyzing customer inquiries or issues, applying criteria/regulations, and determining solutions OR post-high school coursework or training in processing commercial carrier permits, licenses, or similar authorizations.
Extensive experience with computer program customer support by phone.
Work experience involving map reading.
Extensive PC experience.
Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Other: Regular and reliable attendance is required.
KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the state highway system and/or commercial trucking industry.
Good written communication skills regarding grammar and spelling.
Ability to work with, follow, and understand Nebraska State Statutes and NDOT Rules and Regulations concerning the movement of overweight and over-dimensional vehicles.
Ability to work well under pressure, have good interpersonal skills and be able to deal professionally with the public.
