The Physics Department at Nebraska Wesleyan University (NWU) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor to begin August 2025. The successful applicant will exhibit clear promise for excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students, as well enthusiasm for personal engagement with students in a liberal arts environment. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated success in implementing innovative, student-centered approaches in the classroom.

The Physics Department partners in recently expanded 3 2 dual-degree programs for students pursuing engineering. The ideal candidate will have a background in, or strong connections to, engineering/applied physics fields and will enhance our pre-engineering track by integrating elements of authentic engineering practice into existing physics curriculum.

Responsibilities:

Teaching duties will include workshop-format introductory physics for majors and non-majors, upper-level physics classes and laboratories, and survey courses for non-science majors. Typical departmental teaching load is 12 credit hours, i.e., 14 weekly combined classroom and lab contact hours each semester. A newly hired faculty member would have opportunities to mentor student capstone research projects and involve undergraduates in research and other projects beyond the classroom. The candidate will also contribute to undergraduate academic and career advising as well as departmental and campus service.

Qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent in Physics or closely related field from an accredited institution by August 2025.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student-centered active learning and student engagement.
  • Demonstrated engagement in scholarly and/or professional development activities including appropriate research, publications, and/or presentations.
  • Work ethic that promotes teamwork, enhances creativity and motivation, and builds consensus in an academic
  • Understanding of and appreciation for the liberal arts tradition.
