Why NHCS? Neighborhood House Charter School (NHCS) is a tuition-free open enrollment charter school for grades K1-12 in Dorchester that is a public alternative to traditional district schools. We serve over 800 students across two campuses predominantly from the neighborhoods of Dorchester, Roxbury and Mattapan. What is the Academic Dean role? The Academic Dean is responsible for working with other members of the organization’s instructional team, most notably the Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Academic Deans, School Principal, and Special Education Coordinator to lead efforts to systematize and improve elementary and early childhood instruction and outcomes for students in grades 5-7.
This position is at our Queen St. campus and the hours are 7:45am-4 pm. Someone coming to us with a Master’s and two years of experience can expect to make $78,286.

Is this You?
- Work with the Chief Schools Officer and the Middle School Principal to implement plans for curriculum, assessment, intervention, and professional development;
- Facilitate the Middle School Instructional Leadership Team and participate in Middle School general leadership teams;
- Coach teachers in pedagogy and curriculum through adopting NHCS Design Principles, conducting classroom observations, reviewing data and student work, modeling lessons and instructional moves, and engaging in unit and lesson planning meetings;
- Monitor curriculum for alignment with NHCS curricular lenses of identity, inquiry, and accessibility; the science of reading; Common Core State Standards and MA ELA and Literacy Frameworks; and MCAS; and make adjustments as needed;
- Review and refine ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies scope and sequence, pacing documents, instructional guides, and term assessment schedules for grades 5-7.
- Monitor formative and summative assessment practices and expectations;
- Facilitate Response to Intervention meetings and oversee the development and execution of teachers’ intervention plans;
- Develop and lead professional development sessions for staff and grade level teams;
- Support teachers with administering benchmark literacy assessments, as needed;

Qualifications & Skills
- At least two years of teaching experience;
- Ideal candidates will have a valid MA certification;
- Unshakeable belief that every child can be successful;
- Deep knowledge of Common Core State Standards and the science of reading with a proven track record of leading teams of teachers to develop their understanding of the standards and components / skills of literacy within the science of reading;
- Ability to articulate a clear vision, set appropriate goals, and develop a strong framework for implementation and accountability;
- Strong team leader, capable of inspiring and motivating teachers and other school professionals;
- Deep knowledge of best practices related to instructional techniques and pedagogy for lower school grades mathematics and humanities;
- Belief that teachers must learn and influence social/emotional strengths of all children in and out of the classroom;
- Desire to continually reflect and grow as an educator through professional development peer feedback and observation;
- Belief in a school community where students, families, teachers and school leaders demonstrate accountability, flexibility, humor, effort, responsibility, respect and hope;
- Mastery of subject knowledge
