This role plays a key part in volunteer recruitment, coordination, and retention, and helping expand program capacity through a diverse and skilled volunteer network. The Advancement Team includes 13 dedicated professionals who value collaboration, innovation, and creative problem-solving to drive meaningful impact across our organization.
Who You Are

  • Support the management of volunteer data in Better Impact and assist in generating reports to assess program success and identify opportunities for deeper volunteer engagement.
  • Track and maintain accurate records of corporate volunteer engagement, including activities, hours contributed, and partnerships.
  • Support volunteer engagement by assisting in outreach to individuals, community groups, and corporate partners, building relationships through ongoing communication and on-site visits to volunteers during their shifts to foster connection and participation.
  • Assist with volunteer recruitment and engagement through tabling, volunteer fairs, on-site and off-site projects, fundraising events, and other community outreach efforts, including sharing opportunities via emails and flyers.
  • Ensure a smooth volunteer onboarding process by tracking background checks, agreements, and training completion, while also assisting with onboarding sessions.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Volunteer Engagement and program teams to identify volunteer needs and expand program capacity.
  • Assist in coordinating and supporting high school and college interns, as well as work-study students.

What Neighborhood House is looking for in a Volunteer Coordinator:
  • Creative and resourceful. The ability to develop and implement innovative approaches to volunteer engagement, support, and recognition.
  • Comfortable building connections with people from all backgrounds, and excited to help create a welcoming and inclusive environment.
  • Committed to social justice, equity, and practicing anti-racism in everyday work and volunteer engagement.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and someone who’s a good listener and collaborator.
  • Enjoys working as part of a team and can adapt to a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to handle confidential information with discretion and care.
  • Interested in contributing to bigger-picture goals and strategies that grow and improve volunteer programs.
  • Able to juggle multiple tasks and prioritize what’s most important, even when things get busy.
  • Brings a positive attitude, flexibility, and a sense of humor. Because we take the work seriously, but not ourselves!
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is helpful for attending off-site events or meetings.
  • Comfortable lifting up to 35 pounds to help with event or volunteer project set-up.
  • Background checks are part of the hiring process since we work with youth and families. That said, we know everyone has a past. A background check won’t automatically disqualify you, we’re open to conversation and want you to feel safe applying.
Helpful Experience & Skills
  • Experience working, interning, or volunteering in a human services nonprofit, particularly in programs related to food support, housing, education, or community outreach.
  • Previous experience coordinating volunteers or providing direct service in a nonprofit, social services, or community engagement setting.
  • Hands-on experience managing volunteer or donor databases (e.g., Better Impact, VolunteerHub, or similar platforms) to track engagement and program impact.
  • Proficiency in a language other than English, with a preference for Spanish, Somali, Hmong, or other languages commonly spoken in the Twin Cities community.
Diversity & Inclusion
Do you meet most but not all the qualifications? Studies show that women and people of color often hesitate to apply unless they meet every requirement. At Neighborhood House, we value diverse perspectives and are committed to building an inclusive, equitable workplace.
