Position Description:
The Nepco Lake District is seeking a few enthusiastic individuals to serve as part time Watercraft Inspectors, to achieve aquatic invasive species prevention and education on Nepco Lake for the 2025 summer season. The main duties of a Watercraft Inspectors are to work in a pleasant outdoor environment to increase awareness of aquatic invasive species by sharing information about regulations and prevention steps with boaters, anglers, and other visitors at boat landings, and to help these individuals check and clean their watercraft and equipment for aquatic plants and animals before they enter or leave the water. During these checks, inspectors collect valuable data on boater behaviors and knowledge which are required to entered into an online database.
Rate/Duration/Hours:
· Hourly rate is $16 to 18/hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
· The desired work time frame is May through September, and a shortened time frame can be arranged for students or individuals with known schedule conflicts.
· Time commitment is 10 to 20 hours per week, including mainly weekends, over this work period.
· We are planning to hire 3 to 5 watercraft inspectors, depending on the applicant desired work days and amount of hours per week.
· The work will be performed outdoors at the boat landing located in Nepco Lake County Park in Wisconsin Rapids.
Primary Responsibilities:
· Successfully complete a Clean Boats Clean Waters training session. This training is provided at no cost, and you are compensated for the time spent in training.
· Provide information to boat landing visitors and the general public on aquatic invasive species prevention.
· Provide information to boat landing visitors and the public on compliance with WI laws prohibiting launching or transporting boats and related equipment with aquatic plants, animals, or water on board.
· Show boaters how to inspect boats, trailers, tow vehicles and related equipment for the presence/absence of aquatic plants, animals or water.
· Collect and record data in accordance with the Clean Boats, Clean Waters program interview protocol.
· Coordinate efforts with other local watercraft inspectors, harvester technicians, or other members of Wood County or Nepco Lake District..
· Maintain good communication through the summer, and help ensure that the target number of hours and people contacted are achieved.
Secondary Responsibilities:
· As required, attend any special events (such as fishing tournaments, boating events, and local lake events) when high boating traffic is anticipated to educate citizens on prevention steps and how to properly clean boats, trailers, and equipment.
· Provide assistance and guidance to boaters as required when launching and removing their boats.
· If required, enter collected data to a State database on CBCW (not expected to be required in 2025).
Eligibility:
· Must be 16 years old, have a social security number, a valid driver’s license, and transportation to get to work.
· Be able and willing to work early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, including at least one holiday Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day weekends to match peak use of public boat landings.
· Be willing and able to approach, engage, and educate citizens.
· Be well organized, self-motivated, able to multi-task, and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
· Access to a cellular phone while at work is preferred, but not mandatory.
· Boating experience and prior awareness of a lake environment is preferred.
