Position Summary
This full-time, non-exempt position will operate in a biosafety cabinet in a laboratory that tests for H5N1 (Avian flu). The ideal candidate must be willing to wear full lab Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and demonstrate safe and efficient lab practices. Prior lab experience is required. The candidates must exhibit high lab safety standards, excellent communication skills, and an ability to prioritize daily tasks. Essential Duties and Major Responsibilities
- Receive samples.
- Aliquot from the original sample tubes into smaller sample tubes.
- Seal sample tubes.
- Properly store and handle samples.
- Dispose of samples when directed.
- Place printed barcode labels on sample tubes.
- Package samples for shipment by courier following DOT and other applicable requirements.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Basic computer skills are required including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Microsoft Outlook (these skills will be tested as part of the hiring process).
- One (1) or more years of experience performing laboratory functions including the tasks listed below (experience as an undergraduate or graduate student may be considered):
- Proficiency in handling and pipetting fluids.
- Knowledge of basic lab safety protocols.
- Familiarity with required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and its proper use.
- Experience using a biosafety cabinet.
- Ability and willingness to be respirator trained and fit-tested.
Specialized Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Flexibility to adjust to the changing needs, conditions, and work responsibilities to achieve successful solutions and results.
- Ability to hold information confidential including but not limited to names, locations, sample results, NPINs, and all information accessible through the data system.
- Certification in DOT/IATA hazardous materials and dangerous goods shipping and receiving.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety practices, requirements, and compliance.
- Ability to openly communicate.
Wage: $22-$25 per hour
Exposure Risk: Candidates understand they may be exposed to the H5N1 virus during the performance of work. Personnel will routinely handle samples that are likely to contain H5N1. Proper use of laboratory safety precautions mitigates exposure risk. However, the candidate acknowledges that some risks may be inevitable.
