As an Organ Recovery Administrator On Call (AOC), you will play a pivotal role in overseeing and coordinating the organ donation process, ensuring effective communication between medical staff, donor families, and transplant teams. The AOC works a rotating on-call schedule, providing 24/7 support and evaluation of potential organ donors based on their medical histories, lab data, and family dynamics. Key duties include determining whether to proceed with a referral, assessing the need for evaluations, and ensuring legal authorization and compliance with policies. The AOC guides organ recovery coordinators (ORCs), interprets policies, and oversees the donor risk assessment process. The AOC also makes decisions about donor testing, organ preservation, and allocation, while ensuring safe and efficient procedures. The AOC handles concerns from hospital staff, approves deviations from protocols, and provides remote support, in particular donation cases. They also manage staffing, prioritize cases, and ensure recipient safety by identifying documentation errors. The AOC participates in team meetings, provides guidance to new staff, and updates leadership on issues that arise.
Key Responsibilities:
Donor Referral & Evaluation
- Collaborates with hospital and Network for Hope staff to assess organ donor suitability, including chart review, medical history, labs, and family dynamics.
- Determines referral status and necessity of a DCD evaluation.
- Decides on immediate or delayed on-site response and medical director consultation.
- Prioritizes referrals for timely action.
Donor Management
- Advises on hospital NFH policies and escalates deviations.
- Provides remote donor management and approves protocol deviations.
- Oversees diagnostic testing, serology timing, and machine preservation requests.
- Addresses donor hospital staff concerns and updates leadership on case progress
Family Support & Authorization
- Ensures legal authorization compliance with state and hospital policies.
- Manages cases and coordinates on-site response.
- Oversees Donor Risk Assessment Interview (DRAI) for completion and compliance.
- Provides guidance on effective family conversations and code status discussions.
Organ Allocation & Recovery
- Determines organ offers, allocation timing, and cessation of efforts.
- Interprets OPTN policy and approves center bypasses or aggressive sharing.
- Grants permissions for early tissue typing and extended OR delays.
- Responds to transplant team allocation concerns.
Staff Support & Other Duties
- Ensures recipient safety by verifying documentation and identifying high-risk factors.
- Supports ORCs on referrals and donor cases; manages staffing for donor cases.
- Updates leadership on emerging issues.
- Trains new ORC and AOC staff.
- Participates in meetings (in-person/virtual) at team, department, and company levels.
Education, Experience & Training
- Education: Bachelor's degree in nursing, Health Sciences, or a related field; RN or other healthcare licensure preferred. Exceptional candidates with significant health-care experience may also apply.
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of donor management, organ allocation, and recovery experience required.
- Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration: Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator (CTPC) required.
