Description

SUMMARY :

The Indigenous Affairs Producer / Reporter (IA P / R) will produce enterprise journalism from and about Nevada Native communities that drives awareness, conversation and change. The work will include reporting, writing and recording audio news spots and features; producing segments for the State of Nevada current affairs show; and writing stories for Desert Companion magazine and newsletter.

The IA P / R must be a self-starter who is able to travel the region, embedding with tribes and Indigenous groups as required to fully understand and accurately tell their stories.

The IA P / R will report on, write, and / or produce stories about communities, histories and issues in the context of Nevada, the Mountain West region and the nation. They will seek out stories that have not yet been told to general audiences. The goal is to expand and deepen our listeners' and readers' understanding of and connection to their Indigenous neighbors.

Many pieces, such as news spots, will require quick turnarounds. Others, such as profiles, historical pieces, and deep dives, will take more time and need to be followed over days, weeks, or months. Work should be distributed among Nevada Public Radio's various platforms - daily news, weekly newsletter or quarterly magazine - as appropriate to the story being told.

This position will report to the Managing Editor, Heidi Kyser.

CAPABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Develop people-focused stories that engage listeners and readers
  • Possess great interpersonal skills, able to develop trusted reputation and relationships within the community and coverage area
  • Travel throughout the region
  • Create original content for print and digital platforms as assigned, including social media sites
  • Create stories in a variety of formats, from daily news wraps to radio-focused features, including the basic elements of journalistic reportage, such as ledes and nut graphs
  • Assist with audience engagement, helping readers and listeners find answers and solutions

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS :

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in journalism or related field, or equivalent work
  • experience of at least 5 years with experience in reporting
  • Experience to independently make strong news judgements
  • Proven ability to create and edit radio reports / podcasts; grasp of the basic principles of audio recording and editing
  • Ability to produce and write for the ear with clear and complete scripts
  • Mid-level skills in Adobe Audition editing software
  • Knowledge and practice of journalism ethics
  • Knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and AP Style
  • Propensity to work with others in a collaborative and collegial manner
  • Ability to drive a motor vehicle, and possession of a Nevada driver's license, transportation and insurance
  • Working knowledge of field recording and broadcast equipment
  • Working knowledge of editing and transcription software, such as Otter or Hindenburg
  • Familiarity with ENCO or other broadcast automation software
  • Physical Requirements

  • Ability to drive throughout the state, stand, walk, bend, type, reach, see and sit for up to (10) hours
