What are the responsibilities and job description for the Custodian position at New Albany Housing Authority?
The Custodian position performs a variety of cleaning and upkeep tasks at assigned housing developments with minimal supervision. This position performs janitorial services on units to provide eligible families and individuals with quality affordable housing, assist residents to achieve independence, revitalize the community, and provide a suitable environment for all that we serve.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Performs specific grounds care tasks in accordance with established procedures. This includes, but is not limited to, mowing, trimming, and edging. Pruning, fertilizing, watering, reseeding, sweeping walks and drives, patching parking lots and drives, repairing signs, removing snow, spreading sand and or ice-melt.
- Sweeps, mops, scrubs, vacuums and waxes floor.
- Cleans and disinfects surfaces, such as kitchen counters, toilets, etc.
- Replenishes bathroom supplies and replaces light bulbs.
- Empties trash and garbage containers, removes and dispose of trash and garbage, keeps areas around dumpsters clean, and collects discarded furniture and other large items for disposal.
- Operates snow removal equipment to maintain parking lots and sidewalks.
- Deep cleans various areas/properties as needed.
- Notifies management concerning the need for major repairs or additions to lighting, heating, and ventilating equipment.
- Performs all other responsibilities as may be assigned by management.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- High School diploma or GED equivalent; or 3-6 months of related experience and/or training; or a combination of education and experience.
- Must have a current/valid driver's license and ability to be covered under a fleet insurance plan.

- Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat and vibration.
- Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- Ability to work overtime as required.
