Job Title: Part-Time In Person Literacy / Low Beginner ESOL Instructor(s) for NAAM’s Afghan Women Artisans Program
Location: Part-time position available Newburyport
Background: The New American Association of Massachusetts (NAAM) is a non-profit organization that provides social support services to refugees and immigrants in Massachusetts. Core services include: ESOL classes, employment, case management, citizenship, and youth programming. We are currently hiring an ESOL instructor(s) to support the language development of the Afghan women in the NAAM Artisans program.
NAAM Artisans is a new program within the New American Association of Massachusetts starting in 2022. Most of NAAM Artisans’ members are new immigrants who face language barriers along with the day-to-day challenges of acculturating into the USA. Many of the members came to the USA with artisanal skills and talents that they brought from their homeland. The program encourages and supports each member to discover their potential, and to build upon these skills to create professional opportunities and generate income.
Purpose: ESOL Literacy and Basic Beginning Instructor needed for in-person adult ESOL program to teach conversation/pronunciation, reading, listening and writing. Must be available to teach two mornings a week. Demonstrated ability to teach diverse populations and skill levels in one classroom is required. Creativity, compassion and high energy is a must. The instructor will place specific emphasis on U.S. culture and social norms, employment and professionalism expectations, and parent-school communications. Active conversation practice will be encouraged.
The instructor(s) will collaborate with the students’ Case Managers and ESOL Program Managers.
Teachers may create their own employment, wellness, and acculturation, content, or utilize a vast database of collaborative resources in the NAAM collection.
Responsibilities:
Compensation & Schedule: $25 - $27 per hour
Newburyport Schedule:
4 teaching hours: Monday 9-11am and Thursday 9-11am
4 hours of prep time
Total - 8 hours per week

Responsibilities:
- Teaching in-person literacy/ low beginning ESOL class in reading, writing, conversation/pronunciation, grammar to adult learners (approximately 6-12 students).
- Assessing student language skills.
- Creating and implementing ESOL curriculum.
- Excellent command of the English language.
- Experience in ESOL literacy/ low beginner level teaching and demonstrated ability to teach diverse populations and skill levels in one classroom.
- Bachelor's Degree and TESOL/TESL/TEFL certificate.
- Individuals with lived immigrant/refugee experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
- Proficiency and experience in Google Meet (our program’s videoconferencing platform), Google Classroom, Google Slides, Google Sheets, Google Docs for remote positions.
- Speak at least one additional language (preferably Spanish, Swahili, Pashto/Farci, Arabic, or Haitian Creole).
- Familiarity with common ESOL standards and leveling systems (i.e. NRS, Mass. ELPs, NRS, etc.)
