Summer Position - Waterfront Lifeguard Camp Y-Ki
How great would it be to spend the summer outdoors at CAMP? (and to have weekends off!)
The New Canaan YMCA is looking for WATERFRONT LIFEGUARDS to work at our daycamp Camp Y-Ki!
This is a SEASONAL position (mid-June until mid-August) and we are looking for both full time (Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm) and part time certified lifeguards to help keep our waterfront safe and fun for our campers!
Applicants must have valid Lifeguard certification. Waterfront training will be provided.
GENERAL FUNCTION
Works under the direction of the Waterfront Director at Camp Y-Ki, the summer day camp program offered by the New Canaan YMCA. Waterfront Lifeguards will promote safety, conduct swimmer surveillance, and act swiftly and professionally in emergency situations. The Waterfront Lifeguard creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining safe swimming conditions in the lake, and surrounding areas in accordance with the YMCA policies and procedures.
PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES
• Actively conduct surveillance of the waterfront area and the swimmers in the lake
• Ensures member safety and protects lives, including your own life.
• Knows, understands and consistently applies all pool rules, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
• Be in uniform on deck during shift (includes guard shirt, shorts, rescue tube, walkie-talkie, whistle and hip pack).
• Be timely for scheduled shift. Be at least 10 minutes early for scheduled shift.
• Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
• Initiate the emergency action plan when an emergency occurs and provide care for victims as trained.
• Documents and reports all accidents/incidents to the Waterfron Director / Aquatics Director.
• Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
• Attend staff meetings and engages in staff training.
• Maintain and keep all certifications current.
• Perform other duties as designated by supervisor.
• Job description may be changed at any time by supervisor.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the job duties, the employee is frequently required to: climb, kneel, reach, push, swim, crouch, stand, pull, grasp, navigate stairs, stoop, crawl, walk, lift, talk, hear, and sit. The employee may occasionally need to exercise these physical labor demands: exert 60-100 pounds of force occasionally and 20-40 pounds of force frequently. Acute hearing is essential to this position. In this position, this person will be required to work in outside weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, this individual may occasionally be exposed to wet and humid environments and moderate noise.

KNOW-HOW
• Possess current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate or equivalent.
• Minimum of 16 years of age.
• Ability to swim continuously for 300 yards.
• Perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for water rescue.
• Perform resuscitation, all rescues, and survival skills.
• Communicate with others effectively.
• Act swiftly in an emergency and take action.
• Complete the child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire, adhere to all other required trainings and certifications.
• Have the following characteristics: reliable, mature, courteous, consistent, positive, honest, respectful, responsible, caring and professional.
Salary : $18 - $22
