What are the responsibilities and job description for the Nurse Educator position at New Hanover County?
The ideal candidate will be skilled in preparing and delivering presentations; assessing patient health status and needs; assessing program effectiveness; presenting complex information in an understandable and engaging manner; developing and evaluating a plan of care; evaluating service delivery; coordinating services with other providers; examining and interpreting public health statistics; Essential Duties for this position include the following:
- Assists management in the evaluating and identifying staff development needs and making appropriate recommendations for maintenance of skills and areas of improvement.
- Develops, implements, and delivers training programs for nursing staff, including skills training, and continuing education sessions by assessing learning needs.
- Ensures training materials are current and aligned with the latest clinical guidelines and healthcare regulations.
- Conducts simulations, workshops, and hands-on training to reinforce clinical competencies.
- Improves the quality of educational results by providing feedback to nursing leaders for identified areas of improvement and/or remedial training.
- Develops and implements training assessments, evaluations, orientations, and other processes to ensure the effectiveness and consistency of training meets identified goals.
- Maintains knowledge and experience specific to nursing laws, policies, and best practices, including changes to standards of practice.
- Plans and implements annual nurse competencies for school nurses, clinic nurses and other healthcare staff, including emergency response for adverse outcomes.
- Monitors and tracks training activities, records, and resources to ensure attendance of scheduled trainings.
- Researches emerging disease treatment/standards of care and provide in-service to healthcare staff.
- Provides training and evaluates vaccine administration techniques for nurses assisting with seasonal vaccine outreaches.
- Coordinates and oversees Basic Life Support (CPR and AED) classes for healthcare staff.
- Collaborates with Public Health pharmacist to schedule nurse dispensing training classes.
- Serves as primary contact for undergraduate nursing programs partner with New Hanover County Public Health as a clinical site.
- Performs work with regular and predictable attendance consistently meeting the scheduling needs as required by the county.
Salary Information:
The hiring range for this position begins at $65,232. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations. Bilingual candidates are eligible for a differential (5%) when performing Spanish language interpretation during the course of work.

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing that includes a public health nursing rotation and two (2) years of public health nursing experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
- Valid North Carolina Driver License required by the first date of employment.
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license with eligibility to practice nursing in the state of North Carolina.
- Nurses without a Bachelor of Science in Nursing must complete the North Carolina Credentialed Public Health Nurse course within one (1) year of employment.
- Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR and AED) by the American Heart Association.
