Summary
The Director of Information Technology will develop, plan, and implement an information technology (IT) strategy that meets the organization’s business and clinical needs, delivers optimal return on investment, and maintains utmost security.
Essential Functions
The Director of Information Technology is expected to perform the following essential functions:
- Provide leadership for the IT department.
- Develop IT policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Assess current and future information and technology needs of the organization.
- Communicate strategic recommendations with regard to operations, implementation, and security issues to senior leadership.
- Develop standards and processes for the protection of information systems against cyber-attacks.
- Manage IT staff and the day-to-day operations of the IT department.
- Review financial activities of the IT department and assist with the development of the annual IT budget.
- Oversee software integrations, upgrades, and interfaces.
- Stay abreast of new technologies and system enhancements.
- Approve purchases of technological equipment and software and establish partnerships with IT vendors.
- Evaluate vendors and negotiate vendor contracts.
- Ensure that service level agreements are being met.
- Improve information flow.
- Design and/or customize technological systems and platforms to improve patient and staff experience.
- Plan the implementation of new systems and provide guidance to IT professionals and other staff within the organization.
- Oversee the technological infrastructure (networks and computer systems) in the organization to ensure optimal performance.
- Direct and organize IT-related projects.
- Analyze the costs, value, and risks of information technology to advise management and suggest actions.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with providers, department directors, staff, and senior leadership.
- Ensure that the organization’s IT systems meet all legal and regulatory requirements, such as those related to securing protected health information as defined by HIPAA.

Supervisory Responsibilities
- The position supervises the IT staff and oversees day-to-day activities of the IT Department.
Physical demands
- Continuously requires vision, hearing, twisting, and talking. Frequently requires standing, fine dexterity, sitting, and handling. Occasionally requires walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, kneeling, pushing/pulling, bending, and crouching. Rarely requires climbing.
Travel required
- Some time will be spent traveling between NHH’s facilities in Roanoke.
Required education and experience
- Proven experience in an IT managerial role
- Excellent knowledge of IT systems and infrastructure
- Background in designing/developing IT systems and planning IT implementation
- Solid understanding of budgeting and business operations
- Superior analytical and problem-solving capabilities
- A strong strategic and business mindset
- Excellent organizational and leadership skills
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities
- Associate degree in computer science or relevant field
- Working knowledge of clinical electronic health record systems
- Experience managing vendor and service-provider relationships
- Experience with VOIP and Sangoma/SwitchVox phone systems
Preferred education and experience
- At least 5 years of experience in healthcare industry
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science or relevant field
- Working knowledge of network administration, information security, desktop support.
