Currently announcing a vacancy for a chief business services (lead bookkeeper) in Accounting.
Job Summary
Under the direction of a management employee or their designee, supervises and assists in the following major areas of responsibility: financial planning, accounting and taxes, debt service, investments, auditing, payroll preparation, insurance, reporting, personnel management, and other related duties as directed.
Essential Functions
1. Primary responsibility for performing internal audit functions on the financial transactions of the organization and test for compliance with approved policies and procedures.
2.Responsible for all department activities involving the key areas of accounting – payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable – as assigned.
3.Coordinates the workload of the department, supervises and assists the processing of transactions by the accounts payable, payroll and cash receipts clerks.
4.Trains new employees in the accounting department.
5.Responsible for the training and maintenance of accounting computer programs.
6.Assists divisions in the preparation of the annual budget and the processing of related reports.
7.Train divisions on proper use of the general ledger accounts.
8.Responsible for the preparation of all monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for Internal Revenue, Department of Labor, State and other jurisdictions.
9.Responsible for the preparation of trial balances, reports of expenditures, treasurer's reports, and reports of projected expenditures for NJEA affiliated organizations.
10.Prepares account analysis and audit schedules.
11.Assists with special projects related to the accounting department.
12.Assists in the selection and conversion of computer software.
13.Assists in the training of local and county associations when directed.
Qualifications, Training and Experience
A degree in accounting is preferred. In addition, four years of supervisory experience in work involving payroll and payroll taxes, the processing of accounts payable and receivables, and the preparation of financial reports.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to give suitable assignments and instructions to individuals or groups, provide them with advice and assistance when difficult problems arise, and check their work to see that proper procedures are followed, that reasonable standards of workmanship and output are maintained, and that desired objectives are achieved.
Ability to review transactions for proper support, approval, and compliance with specific policies and procedures, and to report exceptions to the appropriate parties.
Ability to supervise the maintenance of time and leave records of individual employees and the calculation of payroll deductions to be made for retirement, withholding taxes, insurance, Blue Cross, and other types of deductions.
Ability to direct the collection and compilation of financial data.
Ability to prepare correspondence and memos which relate to work in the accounting office.
Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative financial and statistical reports.
Ability to supervise the establishment and maintenance of essential records and files.
