Currently announcing a vacancy for an associate director for public relations.

Job Summary

Directly responsible to the Director of the Communications Division for activities related to news coverage of the Association and its issues, and public relations activities of the Association, assistance to UniServ field representatives and local and county affiliates, and writing for NJEA's officers, other leaders, and publications.

Essential Functions

Media Relations - Establish and maintain contacts with reporters, editors, and publishers of newspapers, television stations, radio stations, and magazines, especially the state house press corps and New York City and Philadelphia news personnel. Develop and maintain a positive media relations program pursuing NJEA issues and goals. Keep up-to-date news media mailing lists.

Internal Communications - Working with the various divisions, develop and implement strategies for keeping staff and key leaders informed of events and issues of interest and importance including development and editing of an Intranet and other vehicles designed to develop and maintain a strong internal communications system.

Writing - Prepare speeches and other materials for NJEA officers, leaders, and staff as assigned. Write articles for NJEA publications on issues and activities with which involved.

Public Relations - Work in all aspects of NJEA's public relations programs.

Field Assistance - Assist, on request, NJEA-NEA UniServ field representatives and organization leaders in organizing to deal with the news media, internal communications, and public relations of local and county affiliates. Give particular assistance in the above areas during local school crises and representation disputes.

Training - Organize and conduct training programs on communications topics including media relations, internal communications, public relations, etc. for NJEA-NEA UniServ field representatives, leaders, local and county affiliates, and the general membership.

Opinion polling and research - Use the results of opinion polling and other forms of member and public research to help formulate messages and communication strategies and to determine the effectiveness of existing efforts. Assist with the preparation of member and public polls and research projects as assigned.

General Assistance - Aid, as requested, with other activities of the Association's Communications Division and other divisions.

Qualifications

A candidate should possess a high degree of intelligence and imagination. The person should be a good writer and speaker, able to transfer complex ideas into simple, direct prose and visuals. A candidate should have a thorough understanding of the working press and the public relations and advertising industries. The person must have the creative abilities to pursue PR and advertising initiatives, especially through "earned media." The person should also have the ability to create and track a significant budget, dealing with various vendors and suppliers. A candidate should be familiar with the operations of office computers, especially Microsoft desktop publishing applications. The person should also be familiar with the organization and operation of public schools as well as with the attitudes of school staffs and the activities of their representative organizations.

Training and Experience

Professional training in advertising, public relations, and education are desirable. Experience in implementing media relations, advertising and public relations programs is important. Experience in public school teaching or employment and organizational leadership activities are desirable.
