What are the responsibilities and job description for the Umpire in Chief position at New Melle Sports and Recreation?
New Melle Sports and Recreation (NMSR) is looking for our next Umpire-In-Chief (UIC/ Field Manager) to work 2-3 nights per week starting in April, Ending First week of July (dependent on weather).
Game Nights are primarily Tuesday, Wednesday and some Thursdays.
This is a part-time role that would work with NMSR Executive/Asst. Exec director of Operations, and program directors each week to facilitate our New Horizon baseball and softball games.
This is a leadership role – whereby the focus will be umpiring scheduling, field set-up for each game, nightly game management in the park and providing leadership decisions related to rulebook, weather, player safety, dispute resolution and young umpire mentorship. We are NOT looking for this role to be in-game umpiring while providing this leadership approach, so this can be someone that is looking to field manage only. This job is vital for NMSR to provide a great player/coach experience for REC and REC programs. Job Skills Needed:
Mature and confident leadership approach, ability to work with umpires 14-75 years of
age.
Ability to work 4-5 hours per night x 2-3 days per week at NMSR park facility, Tuesday,
WED, Thursday game nights. Expectation is this role will have 10-12 hours per week
during peak season.
Will work to manage umpire schedule for each league game.
Will work with NMSR management to facilitate field use/set-up for each game.
Will be involved on rain-out decisions, lightning, heat related game decisions.
Understanding of Baseball and Softball rule books (USSSA/USA sanctions, and New
Horizon League Supplement Rule book.
Does NOT have to be an umpire in-game. We are looking for this role to be moving
between fields in the park during game nights.
Communication with Staff/umpires for game assignments.
Can facilitate Field set up changes with game umpires performing base changes, mound
set-ups, pitching machine removals.
Can manage dispute / escalation between coaches, fans, players and umpires on behalf
of NMSR umpires – if needed.
Potential for training of new umpires, recruiting umpires, work with existing umpire core
group.
Ability to drive small tractor, UTV is a plus.
Must be able to use scheduling software/email/text.
Must be able to pass background check and drug screen – SafeSport.
