Position Overview:

The Deputy Director is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the organization’s daily operations, financial sustainability, and strategic initiatives. Working closely with the CEO, the Deputy Director ensures programmatic effectiveness, strengthens internal systems, and fosters a culture of accountability and professional growth. This role also serves as a liaison between staff, leadership, and external stakeholders, helping to advance NMBLC’s mission and long-term impact.

The Deputy Director supports the CEO by providing high-level leadership and management in implementing organizational and program strategies and priorities. Flexibility is key as the role will shift to meet the needs of a dynamic and evolving organization.

Key Responsibilities:

Organizational Leadership & Strategy (30%)

- Serve as a thought partner to the CEO in shaping and executing strategic priorities.

- Lead annual planning processes to align programs, operations, and mission-driven goals.

- Act as a liaison between leadership, staff, and the board, ensuring transparency and accountability.

- Monitor and act upon key performance indicators to ensure achievement of organizational benchmarks.

- Support the development and execution of NMBLC’s strategic plan.

- Represent the ED at meetings when needed.

Operations & Program Oversight (30%)

- Oversee daily operations, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness across all departments.

- Supervise and mentor department heads to ensure programmatic excellence and operational cohesion.

- Develop and implement policies that enhance organizational effectiveness and compliance.

- Ensure program outcomes align with grant/funding requirements and strategic goals.

- Oversee programmatic logistics, including scheduling, securing equipment, and managing vendor relationships.

- Identify opportunities for new programming and services.

Finance, Fund Development & Compliance (20%)

- Work closely with the CEO and internal and external accounting departments to manage budgeting and financial planning.

- Ensure financial sustainability by identifying funding opportunities and supporting grant writing.

- Oversee financial reporting, including grant compliance, contract invoicing, and budget management.

- Ensure nonprofit compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

- Present financial data to the ED and subsequently to the Board for approval.

People & Culture (15%)

- Supervise and mentor designated staff, fostering a culture of accountability and professional growth.

- Oversee HR functions, including hiring, performance evaluations, and employee relations.

- Develop HR policies that promote equity, inclusion, and employee well-being.

- Ensure personnel receive proper onboarding, training, performance management and support.

- Utilize key performance indicators to evaluate staff performance and implement necessary interventions.

- Recognize staff achievements and address performance concerns with progressive strategies.

External Relations & Advocacy (5%)

- Represent NMBLC with funders, government agencies, coalitions, and key stakeholders.

- Build strategic partnerships that enhance the organization’s reach and impact.

- Oversee content creation for websites, reports, and development materials.

Qualifications & Experience:

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, operations, human resources, or financial management (or equivalent experience in place of a degree).

- Minimum 7 years in nonprofit leadership, including team management.

- Proven ability to develop and implement strategic plans and improve operational systems.

- Experience overseeing programs with measurable impact.

- Strong financial acumen, including budget oversight, financial planning, and fundraising knowledge.

- Experience supervising and mentoring staff with a focus on talent development.

- Strong ability to engage and collaborate with funders, policymakers, and community partners.

- Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles.

- Proficiency in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office Suite.

- Valid New Mexico driver’s license and clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

- Master’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Business, Public Administration, or a related field.

- Experience in education, health equity, housing, or other relevant sectors.

- Prior experience in a rapidly growing or transitioning nonprofit.

- Strong understanding of grant management and reporting.

- Experience with nonprofit compliance and HR best practices.

- Experience in collaborating with and addressing the needs of historically excluded and underrepresented communities in New Mexico.

- Technological proficiency and ability to provide training for staff on key systems.
