The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) is one of the executive branch agencies of the State of New Mexico. The Population and Community Health Bureau (PCHB) collaborates with populations, communities, organizations, and systems to create health equity where New Mexicans live, learn, work, and play.
Why does the job exist?
This position supports the Obesity, Nutrition, and Physical Activity (ONAPA) and Healthy Kids Healthy Communities (HKHC) program's efforts to increase healthy eating and physical activity opportunities where children and adults live, learn, play, work, eat, and shop. Healthy eating and physical activity two lifestyle behaviors that can help prevent obesity and subsequent chronic disease.
How does it get done?
This position will: 1) develop, support, and maintain state and local partnerships to advance healthy eating and physical activity initiatives statewide and in HKHC counties and tribal communities across New Mexico; 2) participate in strategic planning to effectively implement the program's statewide healthy eating, physical activity, and obesity prevention strategies in the following settings: early care and education, schools, food system, and the built environment; 3) provide on-going technical assistance, training, and support to HKHC, Healthy Kids Healthy Preschool (HKHP), and other program contractors and partners; and 4) use program data to plan, evaluate, and guide program development, and 4) support overall program administrative operations.

ONAPA and HKHC program staff, state and local partners, state agencies, policymakers, community-based organizations, and individuals.
Ideal Candidate
- Master's degree in public health and two (2) years of experience in a public health setting with a focus on nutrition, physical activity, and obesity prevention.
- Experience working in local communities on strategies to increase opportunities for healthy eating and physical activity.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Public Health or Education and two (2) years of experience in a health related field. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Ability to travel for during the day and/or overnight for one or more days including occasional weekends.
Working Conditions
Work in an office setting with exposure to visual/video display terminal (VTD) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Ability to work from home (telework), if required, with access to reliable internet connection and computer device(s). Ability to lift up to 40 lbs (bending, stooping and reaching) and meet numerous deadlines. Activities also include delivering, carrying, and using measurement equipment for statewide BMI surveillance which involves walking, standing, crouching, kneeling, bending, reaching, pulling and pushing. Position requires day and overnight travel and the use of state vehicles.
