The Injury and Behavioral Epidemiology Bureau (IBEB) collects data on health-related practices and health status, conducts data analysis to identify risk factors, describes the distribution of disease, and implements evidence-based injury prevention strategies. IBEB - Injury Epidemiology Section, in particular, conducts surveillance on injuries such as violence and unintentional injuries within NM, assesses its negative health consequences, and promotes the use of effective interventions to address public health issues resulting from injuries.

Why does the job exist?

The successful applicant will lead the Injury Prevention Epidemiology Unit in the Office of Injury Prevention. The incumbent will work closely with the Office of Injury Prevention leadership to support staff and programs in the Office. The successful candidate will conduct surveillance and epidemiological research in leading causes of injury and violence-related morbidity and mortality in New Mexico. The successful candidate will supervise at least three epidemiologists, and a data abstractor. The incumbent will manage data, organize and design studies, and evaluate projects and programs on leading causes of injury and violence-related morbidity and mortality, produce publications, presentations, and epidemiology reports for statewide and local use, and make policy recommendations on key topics of injury and violence prevention. The incumbent will be responsible for oversight of New Mexico's National Violent Death Reporting System and may serve as the primary investigator. The successful applicant will provide epidemiological support and data to agencies working to prevent and/or reduce the incidence and severity of injury and violence. The incumbent will lead or participate in writing and submitting grant applications to help advance injury and violence prevention in NM. The candidate should have experience in working with major data sets such as mortality, hospitalization, emergency department data.

  • Conduct surveillance on injury morbidity and mortality, for the State in general.
  • Respond to data request from injury prevention staff and other stakeholders, including presenting at different venues

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will possess knowledge and experience in public health surveillance, program evaluation, data management, weighted survey analysis and analysis of data using SAS, R, and/or STATA statistical packages. The candidate should be able interpret statistical results and present these findings to different audiences.

Minimum Qualification

Master's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Sciences, Social Sciences, or Statistics and two (2) years in Public Health to include data analysis and linking methodology. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, stooping, bending, reaching and lifting to twenty-five (25) pounds may be required. Some travel may be required.
