New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) invites applications for a term faculty member to join the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice. We seek an archaeologist with a broad research focus, preferably with a specialization in North America and/or prior work experience in Cultural Resource Management (CRM). The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in CRM or demonstrated expertise in areas such as ceramic and lithic analysis, museum studies, biological anthropology or forensics, or working with legacy collections. Experience teaching undergraduate courses and working with rural college students, particularly among Native American students, or at a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) like NMHU, will be favorably viewed. Targeted salary $51,900.00
Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach a 2/2 load of undergraduate and graduate courses in archaeology, including general
and specialized topics.
- Dedicate 50% of work hours to the administrative management of the Archaeology Lab,
including overseeing lab activities, supervising lab staff, and ensuring proper care and
use of collections and equipment.
- Participate in community outreach and contribute to the public understanding of
archaeology, especially as it relates to the cultural heritage of the Americas.
- Active engagement in departmental, college, and university service, including curriculum
development and committee work.
Minimum Qualifications
- Collaborate with local and regional institutions on research and fieldwork opportunities.
- M.A. or Ph.D. in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a closely related field by the time of appointment.
- The candidate should have a background and strong interest in working with historically marginalized ethnoracial communities, or experience with tribal agencies, state SHPOs, a body of work in Cultural Resource Management (at the federal or private level), Lithic or Ceramic Analysis, or working with skeletal, repository, or legacy collections.
- A demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate level, as well as somebody who will contribute to our growing online M.A. program in CRM.
- Training in curating collections of archaeological and ethnographic materials, skeletal collections, and a background in regulations pertaining to NAGPRA.
- Evidence of teaching related to archeology and physical anthropology.
- Knowledge in Cultural Resource Management, tribal relations, and membership and
involvement in professional organizations.
- Adeptness with technology in the classroom, and delivery of on-line/distance
learning courses.
- The ability to offer courses in Forensics, Lithic, or Ceramic Analysis.
- A commitment to interdisciplinary research and collaboration.
- Background with mentoring students and leading field schools.
- Administrative experience in managing laboratory facilities and collections.
- Training in curating collections of archaeological and ethnographic materials, skeletal collections, and a background in regulations pertaining to NAGPRA.
- Evidence of teaching related to archeology and physical anthropology.
- Knowledge in Cultural Resource Management, tribal relations, and membership and
involvement in professional organizations.
- Adeptness with technology in the classroom, and delivery of on-line/distance
learning courses.
