New Mexico Legal Aid (NMLA) provides civil legal services to low-income New Mexicans for a variety of legal issues including domestic violence / family law, consumer protection, housing, and benefits. NMLA has locations throughout the state.
New Mexico Legal Aid seeks a Payroll Accountant in our Albuquerque Office.
Job Summary : The Payroll Accountant will oversee all aspects of the automated payroll function, ensuring payroll is processed timely, accurately and in compliance with governmental accounting regulations. In addition, the payroll accountant reconciles payroll general ledgers, prepares, and enters journal vouchers and runs reports for analysis.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities :
- Implements, maintains, and reviews payroll processing to ensure timely and accurate payroll transactions including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions.
- Reconciles with the Human Resources department the accurate and timely processing of employee updates including new hires, terminations, and changes to pay rates and benefits.
- Maintains accurate records and reports of payroll transactions, including updating of W4s and tax withholding on wages and benefits.
- Works effectively with the HR department to ensure proper controls, document flows, coordination of changes, and data integrity.
- Reviews and reconciles employee leave balances and update MIP general ledgers and payroll files.
- Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local payroll wage and hour laws.
- Enters employee reimbursements i.e., travel expenses, benefits, and others.
- Manages payroll disbursements, including benefits, 403(b) and other compensation adjustments.
- Verifies quarterly tax reports and mandatory tax deposits and reconciles year-end payroll processing of W2s.
- Prepares journal entries for all payroll transactions including bank transfers and payroll liabilities for approval of the CFO.
- Assists annual audit, Workers compensation insurance audit, and coordinates 403(b) plan compliance testing and 403(b) plan audit.
- Assist with preparation of invoices for billed revenue related to payroll and benefits by fund type.
- Generates a range of complex payroll-related reports, aiding management in making well-informed decisions.
- Utilizes critical analysis skills to research, analyze, and retrieve data for preparation and maintenance of payroll reports, summaries, and reports.
- Conducts intricate payroll data preparation and analysis for collective bargaining negotiations, ensuring accurate calculations. Provides confidential information, reports, and analysis to support negotiation process.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
This position is housed in the Albuquerque Office.
