The Cook is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious and appealing meals for residents of the veteran homeless facility. This role plays a vital part in supporting the physical and emotional well-being of our residents by providing consistent, high-quality food in a compassionate and respectful environment. The Cook will adhere to all food safety regulations and maintain a clean and organized kitchen.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Meal Preparation:Prepare and cook a variety of meals according to planned menus, recipes, and dietary requirements, including special diets as needed.
- Ensure meals are prepared in a timely manner and served at appropriate temperatures.
- Prepare meals that are both nutritious and appealing to the residents.
- Utilize standardized recipes and portion control to maintain consistent quality and control costs.
- Food Safety and Sanitation:Adhere to all local, state, and federal food safety regulations and sanitation standards.
- Maintain a clean and organized kitchen, including proper storage of food and supplies.
- Ensure proper handling and disposal of food waste.
- Monitor and record food temperatures and maintain accurate logs.
- Inventory and Ordering:Assist with inventory management and ordering of food and supplies.
- Monitor food stock levels and report shortages to the Food Service Manager.
- Ensure proper rotation of food items to prevent spoilage.
- Resident Interaction (as appropriate):Create a positive and welcoming dining environment.
- Interact with residents in a respectful and compassionate manner.
- Be mindful of the unique needs and challenges faced by veterans experiencing homelessness.
- Possibly communicate with residents regarding dietary needs, and preferences.
- Equipment Maintenance:Ensure proper operation and maintenance of kitchen equipment.
- Report any equipment malfunctions to the Food Service Manager.
- Teamwork:Work collaboratively with other staff members to ensure efficient food service operations.
- Assist with other kitchen duties as assigned.
- Sensitivity:Demonstrate sensitivity to the unique needs of a veteran population, including those with PTSD, substance abuse issues, or other challenges.
- Maintain confidentiality and respect resident privacy.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience as a cook in a commercial kitchen or institutional setting.
- Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices.
- Ability to follow recipes and prepare meals according to dietary guidelines.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
- Food handler's certification (required).
- Experience working with populations that have experienced homelessness, or trauma is a plus.
- An understanding of veteran culture is a plus.
