Children's Education is seeking a School and Out-of-School Programs Assistant Educator to assist for two middle and high school enrichment initiatives. The Assistant will support programs with the Coordinator of School and Out of School Programs for :
- GEAR Up (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) :
Six (6) School-Time Career Discovery Days at NYBG Days
Two (2) Spring and Summer Recess Science workshopsOne (1) Family Engagement EveningCASA (Cultural After School Adventures) :Four (4) On-Site Visits to NYBG (program launch and culmination) for two local middle schools
Three (3) 10-Week afterschool workshops at two local middle schoolsNYC PS Summer Recess NYBG Career Discovery WeekOne (1) one-week Summer Camp for 8th, 9th grade students (tentative)
The Assistant Educator will support the Coordinator in executing a curriculum that engages students in phenomena-based inquiry learning about NYBG's mission. This includes culturally responsive activities that explore the Garden landscape and its conservation efforts.
The Assistant Educator will support immersive activities in Plant Science and Conservation, Horticulture, and Education, connecting students with Garden professional to link science with everyday life and possible career paths.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities :
Support learning experiences and assist workshops including gathering, setting up, and maintaining supplies, and teaching facility and cleaning up after programmingCollaborate on program needs with CoordinatorDocument GEAR UP program for institutional memory by taking photos while programs are in session and organizing them on TEAMSReflect on practices and participate in a professional learning community to enhance science teaching in both garden and classroom settingsTravel to CASA partner school and help transport supplies / materialsQualifications
Potential candidates must have an undergraduate degree with experience in informal outdoor or museum education. Strong science (ecology, botany, or horticulture) background requiredFamiliarity with Next Generation Science Standards and three-dimensional principles of instructionExcellent oral communication skills are required. Strong organizational skills, the ability to make decision and work independently and as part of fa team requiredAbility to work in all weather conditions and to be flexible and responsive in a complex, dynamic, and fast-paced environmentPrior experience engaging and sparking wonder and curiosity with teen audiencesMust be available for the following schedule :Six (6) BGUT NYBG Career Discovery Days 9 : 45am - 1 pmWorkshop #1 : CIMS : dates to choose from : Tuesday, February 4, Wednesday, March 5, Tuesday, April 1st

TOTAL POSITION HOURS : GEAR UP 110 300 CASA hours = 410Physical Demands & Work Environment :
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to, at minimum, stand, walk, sit, use hands, handle tools, climb ladders, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must be able to lift and or move up to 25 pounds. Work outdoors under a variety of weather conditions. Work under low, moderate, or loud work conditions.
