He is the first Indian-American ever elected to the City Council in NYC history. Shekar is also Chair of the Council’s Committee On Parks and Recreation. He negotiated the highest budget ever for NYC Parks. As Parks Chair, Shekar has approached access to parks and expanding green space as a key component of social, racial, and immigrant justice.Job Overview : The Communications Coordinator / Manager will oversee and manage all aspects of communications for the City Council Member’s office. This position will be responsible for creating and executing a comprehensive communication strategy that promotes transparency, engages the community, and effectively communicates the City Council Member’s priorities, policy initiatives, and public events. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional writing, public relations, and media relations skills, along with the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced and dynamic political environment.Key Responsibilities :
Strategic Communication Planning : Develop and implement a comprehensive short and long-term communications strategy that supports the City Council Member’s goals, policy initiatives, and public image.Social Media Management : Oversee the City Council Member’s social media presence across multiple platforms, including the creation of graphics, the capture of photos, and the writing of captions.Newsletter Management : Write and create weekly constituent newsletters by compiling newsworthy hits and visuals.Press Communications and Relations : Serve as the primary spokesperson for the City Council Member, cultivating and maintaining relationships with local, regional, and national media outlets. Respond to media inquiries and coordinate press conferences. Write press releases, statements, op-eds, and talking points. Proactively brainstorm and pitch stories to media.Monitoring & Analytics : Track media coverage, public opinion, and the effectiveness of communication efforts of the Council Member and our office. Use analytics to adjust strategies and improve outreach efforts. Have an up-to-date understanding of relevant city issues by monitoring key media outlets and social media accounts, using trends to inform our output.Community Affairs : Provide supplemental support to the Community Affairs team, by serving as a liaison between the Council Member’s office and constituents, conduct timely follow-up to ensure favorable resolutions for the constituent and maintain clear records of interactions and work completed. Assist in organizing, promoting, and / or staffing community events, town halls / board meetings, press conferences, and other activities. Ensure that all communications associated with events are timely and effectively executed.Language Access : Provide translation and interpretation services as needed.Qualifications :
Manager Position : 5 years of relevant experience in communications, public relations, or journalismStrong writing and editing skills, with the ability to tailor content for different audiencesDeep understanding of media relations, including pitching stories, writing press releases, and handling media inquiriesExpertise in social media platforms, including strategy development, content creation, and analyticsExcellent interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populationsAbility to work under pressure, on the go, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environmentAbility to manage multiple projects simultaneously, with strong attention to detail and organizational skillsProficiency in Canva and video editing platformsKnowledge of city services, government processes, and community resources is a plusNYC Residency, or willingness to relocate within 90 days of employmentSalary and benefits : The salary for this position will be in the $58,000 to $70,000 range.Covered title by the Association of Legislative Employees.
