Minimum Qualifications
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).*
To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS candidates must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications for this position.
Additional Comments
At a future date, it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
Duties Description
- Assesses individuals’ physical, communication and cognitive skills to develop and implement a treatment plan.
- Serves as a member of a treatment team; attend care plan meetings, communicates occupational therapy treatment plans to family members.
- Administers occupational therapy programs and provide treatment to individuals with more complicated occupational therapy needs.
- Selects, trains, and monitors adaptive techniques and equipment; regularly inspects and ensures maintenance of equipment.
- Apply interventions to maximize safety and performance in activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental ADL.
- Teach individuals new ways of approaching tasks and educate on how to break down activities into achievable components.
- Assist individuals’ exercise for pain relief.
- Observe and review individuals’ progress and adapt treatment accordingly.
- Supervises and trains Occupational Therapy Assistants.
- Evaluates and initiates skilled Occupational Therapy treatments, in accordance with provider orders.
- Maintains communication with providers.
- Performs and completes paperwork and billing in a timely manner.
- Participates with interdisciplinary communication and collaboration.
- Updates Resident’s care plan when changes are noted.
- Participates with discharge planning and home assessments.
- Participates with identifying and ordering equipment needed.
- Supervises Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant, reviews, and cosigns paperwork.
- Professional interaction with residents, coworkers, visitors, and families.
- Attends to responsibilities of the Director of Rehab in their absence
Minimum Qualifications

- Possession of a license and current registration as a physical therapist in New York State**.
