Standard Duties:

Duties Description

The Safety and Health Inspector/Trainee incumbent in the Division of Safety and Health will plan, schedule, and conduct Safety & Health Inspections/trainings of selected work sites such as state, county, city, and town offices. Inspections will also be conducted at places of public assembly, ski areas, carnivals, fairs and amusement parks, explosives magazines, power scaffolds, and other window-washing operations. These inspections are made in order to assure conformance with established standards, identifying unsafe conditions and work practices and to protect workers and the public.

Minimum Qualifications

This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, if they meet the below NY HELPS minimum qualifications.

NY HELPS Non-Competitive Minimum Qualifications:

SAFETY AND HEALTH INSPECTOR TRAINEE:

Four years of experience in field inspections pertaining to the enforcement of building laws, codes, and regulations or in an occupational safety or public safety setting as an evaluator or inspector for a public or private organization evaluating the effectiveness of safety devices, protective equipment, or safety programs; or four years of experience in an apprenticeable trade in the manufacturing or construction industries, or active-duty military, or fire protection, which must include responsibility for the enforcement of safety standards and procedures by workers in that trade; or four years of experience with asbestos or mold inspections or abatement.

Substitution:

An associate degree* can substitute for two years of specialized experience; a bachelor’s degree* can substitute for four years of experience; a master’s degree* in a related field can substitute for five years of experience; and a doctorate* in a related field can substitute for six years of experience.

Safety And Health Inspector:

55 B/C Qualifications:

This position is designated 55b/c and is subject to verification of applicant eligibility. Please provide a copy of your 55b/c letter when applying. You must meet the open competitive qualifications from the most recent examination announcement.

Reassignment Qualifications:

Current Department of Labor employees only, with at least one year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service in a Safety & Health Inspector/Trainee; if you have less than one year, you must be reachable on the list for this location, if one exists.

70.1 Transfer Qualifications:

One year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service as a Grade 12 or higher determined to be similar by Civil Service.

70.4 Transfer Qualifications:

  • One year of permanent, contingent-permanent or 55 b/c service in a position allocated to a Salary Grade 12 or higher. 2. A passing score on the Safety and Health Inspector/Trainee exam and 3. Must meet the minimum qualifications of a Safety and Health Inspector/Trainee. Note: Candidates must not have failed the most recent examination for this title.

As this position requires travel, the appointee must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and have a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.

This position may require a fingerprint background check prior to appointment.

Physical/Medical Requirements: A medical examination will be required prior to appointment, and you are responsible for payment of the clinical laboratory test fee. You may be required to have your physical and medical conditions evaluated annually to ensure that you are able to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.

Position specific job duties may include occasional altered work schedule or job assignments which require availability and willingness to work occasional evenings and/or out-stationed assignments.

Telecommuting is available and can be discussed during the interview.

Candidates with no previous state service will begin at the starting rate of the salary range listed above.

Additional location pay is available for the following counties: Bronx, Kings, Nassau, NYC-Manhattan, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester, Dutchess, Orange, and Putnam.
